Getting Started in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition tests how fast you manage resources while controlling military forces across four distinct historical eras. Every match demands constant decision-making between economic growth and aggressive expansion.

Core Gameplay Loop

Victory comes down to four connected steps that run continuously from the first second of a match.

  1. Keep your Town Center active. A Town Center sitting idle puts you behind on Villager count, which hurts your entire economy.
  2. Collect the four primary resources. Food fuels Villager production and Age advancements. Wood builds houses, farms, and military structures. Gold pays for technologies and elite units. Stone builds Castles, Town Centers, and defensive walls.
  3. Advance through the Ages. Progressing from the Dark Age to Feudal, Castle, and Imperial Ages unlocks stronger units, vital upgrades, and heavier siege weapons.
  4. Scout and engage. Map control wins games. Locate enemy positions early and build counter units to shatter their attack strategies.

First Minutes: Dark Age Routine

The opening three minutes establish your economic engine. Execute these exact steps immediately after loading into a match:

  1. Select Town Center and queued Villagers. Press H to select your Town Center, then tap Q four times to queue four Villagers. Never let this queue empty.
  2. Assign initial Villagers to sheep. Select two Villagers to build two Houses. Select your third Villager to build a separate House. Send your initial Scout Cavalry out to circle your base. Once the Houses finish, send all three Villagers to harvest your herdable sheep directly under your Town Center.
  3. Send your Scout scouting. Move your Scout in concentric circles around your Town Center. Locate four starting sheep, two wild boars, two deer patches, a primary woodline, a primary gold vein, and a primary stone quarry.
  4. Add Villagers to Wood. The next four Villagers created at your Town Center go to build a Lumber Camp on your main forest line.
  5. Lure the first Boar. Once you have six Villagers on sheep and four on wood, your 11th Villager must shoot a wild boar, then run straight back to the Town Center. Boars move at 0.8 speed, matching a standard Villager. Issue a single, clean right-click command back to your Town Center. If your luring Villager stutters or changes direction mid-retreat, the boar AI will reset its aggro and walk back to its spawn. Your sheep-harvesting Villagers kill the boar right as it arrives under the Town Center umbrella.

Vital Hotkeys and Control Groups

Mouse clicks alone will not keep pace with experienced opponents. Master these default key bindings to save seconds on every action.

Four New Player Traps to Avoid

1. The Idle Town Center

Leaving your Town Center inactive for even 30 seconds costs you a full Villager of production. Over 10 minutes, lost TC time compounds into hundreds of missing resources. Keep your queue populated with at least one or two Villagers at all times.

2. Population Housing Blocks

Building a house after hitting your population limit halts worker and military production. Watch your population counter at the top of the screen. When you are two units away from your current housing cap, assign a builder Villager to construct a new House.

3. Floating Unused Resources

Stockpiling 1,000 Wood or Food in the Feudal Age without a specific plan means your resources are sitting useless. Spend excess resources immediately on military units, tech research, extra Town Centers, or Age advancements.

4. Delayed Map Scouting

Keeping your Scout static near your base leaves you blind to enemy military choices. Scout your opponent's base by minute five to check if they are mining Gold for Archers, building a Stable for Scouts, or walling up for a fast Castle Age build.

Each age unlocks stronger military units, economic upgrades, and architectural options.
