Naval Combat & Water Maps Guide
Mastering water and hybrid maps requires managing a dual economy of land workers and fishing fleets while commanding naval combat squads.
The Naval Counter Triangle
Naval warfare operates on a strict counter triangle between three primary vessel lines.

Demolition Ships Fire Ships
| Vessel Class | Primary Hard Counter | Key Strengths | Weak Against |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Ships (Fire Galley / Fire Ship / Fast Fire Ship) | Galleys / War Galleys | High pierce armor and rapid flame attack at short range | Demolition Ships, Castle shoreline fire |
| Galleys (Galley / War Galley / Galleass / Cannon Galleon) | Demolition Ships / Land Infantry | Long firing range and micro mobility | Fire Ships (in close quarter battles) |
| Demolition Ships (Demo Raft / Demolition Ship) | Fire Ships / Clumped Naval Squads | Heavy area-of-effect blast damage upon contact | Ranged Galley focus fire before contact |
| Dromons | Shore Fortifications / Static Fleets | Fires heavy projectile bursts to clear coastal Castles | Fast combat ships when isolated |
Dark Age Fishing Economy
Building Fishing Ships at a Dock creates a secondary food income stream that does not compete with Town Center Villager queue costs.
Build Dock early ──> Train Fishing Ships ──> Harvest Deep Fish ──> Fast Feudal Transition
- Early Dock Timing: Construct a Dock with your 6th or 7th Villager on water maps (such as Baltic, Islands, or Nomad).
- Deep Fish vs Shore Fish: Direct Fishing Ships to harvest deep fish spots rather than shore fish. Deep fish harvest rates exceed land foraging and match deer hunting speeds.
- Dock Micro: Drop off food by queuing Fishing Ships directly to deep fish nodes. Keep Docks close to deep fish lines to minimize transit distance.
Coastal Siege and Dromons
Controlling the shoreline allows naval forces to project power far inland.
- Cannon Galleons: Unlocked in Imperial Age with Chemistry. Out-ranges land Castles and Towers, providing heavy artillery support for land invasions.
- Dromons: Replaces Cannon Galleons for specific Mediterranean and Eastern civilizations (such as Byzantines, Romans, Huns, and Goths). Dromons fire heavy stone volleys that crush coastal walls and grouped ground troops.
- Shoreline Defense: Defend your coastlines by building Watch Towers and Castles slightly inland out of standard Galley range, or massing Demolition Rafts near narrow water choke points.
