Unit Counters & Combat Guide
Combat in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition runs on hard counter multipliers, so army composition beats raw unit count. Spearmen and their upgrades counter cavalry, cavalry counter archers and siege, and Skirmishers counter archers. Gold units carry the early and middle game while gold-free trash units take over once map gold veins run dry.
Battles in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition depend on hard mathematical counter multipliers. Outputting raw numbers will fail if your army composition matches up poorly against your opponent's unit choices.
The Rock-Paper-Scissors Counter Triangle
Understanding primary counter dynamics prevents wasteful military trades. The triangle cycles in one direction:
| Unit Line | Counters | Beaten By |
|---|---|---|
| Spearmen / Pikes | Cavalry | Archers and Skirmishers |
| Knights / Cavalry | Archers, Siege | Spearmen / Pikes |
| Skirmishers / Archers | Spearmen | Cavalry |
| Main Unit Class | Primary Hard Counter | Secondary Counter | Weak Against |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cavalry (Knights/Scouts) | Spearmen (+15 vs Cav) / Pikemen (+22 vs Cav) / Halberdiers (+32 vs Cav) | Camels / Heavy Camels | Massed Archers, Monks |
| Archers (Crossbows/Arbalests) | Skirmishers / Elite Skirmishers | Mangonels / Onagers | Cavalry (in open ground) |
| Infantry (Militia/Longswords) | Archers / Hand Cannoneers | Scorpions / Chokepoints | Cavalry, Siege Engines |
| Siege (Mangonels/Scorpions) | Light Cavalry / Knights | Eagle Warriors | Massed Ranged Fire, Bombard Cannons |
| Monks | Light Cavalry / Eagles | Skirmishers | Heavy Mass Charges |
Counter Exceptions: Cataphracts and Sicilians
Do not assume Halberdiers counter all mounted units automatically.
- Byzantine Cataphracts: Possess +12 Cavalry armor (+16 for Elite Cataphracts), cutting the Halberdier's +32 bonus damage down to +20 or +16. Counter Cataphracts with massed Arbalesters or Champions instead.
- Sicilian Units: Sicilian land military units innately resist 40% of all incoming bonus damage, significantly reducing the impact of counter units. The resistance never applies to their siege weapons.
Gold Units vs Trash Units
Military units fall into two distinct economic categories: gold-costing power units and gold-free trash units.
| Gold Units (Power Core) | Trash Units (Gold-Free Support) |
|---|---|
| Knights / Paladins | Spearmen / Halberdiers |
| Crossbows / Arbalests | Skirmishers / Elite Skirmishers |
| Mangonels / Trebuchets | Scout Cavalry / Hussars |
- Gold Units: Expensive units like Knights, Crossbowmen, and Siege Engines cost Gold alongside Wood or Food. They possess high base statistics and dominant combat scaling.
- Trash Units: Spearmen, Skirmishers, and Scout Cavalry cost zero Gold. They act as targeted counters to specific gold units.
- Economic Strategy: Spend Gold during early and middle game power spikes. Transition into trash unit compositions when primary map gold veins run dry during late Imperial battles.
High Ground and Terrain Advantages
Elevation alters damage math significantly.
- Hill Bonus (+25% / -25%): Units positioned on elevated terrain deal 25% extra damage to lower targets, while units firing upward suffer a 25% damage penalty. This creates a net 66.66% mathematical advantage for the high-ground position. Tatars deal an upgraded +50% from high ground instead of +25%. The Georgian bonus is narrower than it is usually described: it applies to buildings only, which take 40% less damage on higher elevation instead of the standard 25%. Georgian units get nothing from it.
- Cliff & Forest Chokepoints: Funneling large cavalry armies through narrow tree passes negates their numerical advantage. Position archers or mangonels behind natural barriers to punish clumped units.
- Building Cover: Ranged units taking fire can retreat under the garrison umbrella of a Town Center or Castle to gain free defensive firepower while protected inside.
Essential Combat Micro Techniques
Control mechanics can swing unfavorable engagements in your favor.
1. Archer Stutter-Stepping (Kiting)
Order your ranged squad to fire a salvo, click backwards to retreat while their attack animation resets, then press the Stop key (G) or use Attack Ground to fire again. This keeps melee cavalry from closing distance while taking continuous damage.
2. Mangonel Attack Ground
Do not target individual moving infantry units with a Mangonel. Instead, select Attack Ground (T) and click the spot on the ground where the enemy army will walk two seconds in the future. A well-placed boulder hit can wipe out 15 archers instantly.
3. Monk Conversion RNG Mechanics
Monk conversions do not operate on a simple flat timer. The engine counts conversion intervals of roughly 1.25 in-game seconds each. A regular unit is immune for the first 4 intervals, then faces a 38% conversion roll on every interval from the 5th onward, with conversion guaranteed by the end of the 9th. Resistant units like the Scout Cavalry and Eagle Warrior lines stretch that window to a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10 intervals. Buildings and siege weapons are far tougher: rolls start at the 15th interval at only 13% each, with conversion guaranteed by the 25th.
4. Splitting vs Area Damage
When facing enemy Mangonels or Onagers, spread your army before the shot lands. The game has no dedicated split command, so do it manually: switch to Staggered Formation (C) to widen unit spacing, or pre-assign your army to two control groups and pull them in opposite directions the moment the Mangonel fires. Re-form into Line Formation (Z) once the projectile lands safely away from your troops.
5. Stop Micro for Melee Pathing
Melee units in large battles often gridlock or stutter when pathing around friendly units. Tapping the Stop key (G) repeatedly during melee combat forces units to immediately recalculate proximity targets, resolving pathing bugs and maximizing damage per second.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counters Knights in Age of Empires II?
Spearmen deal +15 versus cavalry, Pikemen deal +22, and Halberdiers deal +32. Camels and Heavy Camels serve as the secondary counter, and massed Archers or Monks also punish Knights.
Why do Halberdiers struggle against Cataphracts?
Byzantine Cataphracts carry +12 Cavalry armor, rising to +16 on the Elite upgrade, which cuts the Halberdier +32 bonus damage down to +20 or +16. Counter them with massed Arbalesters or Champions instead.
What are trash units in Age of Empires II?
Trash units are the Spearmen, Skirmisher, and Scout Cavalry lines, all of which cost zero Gold. They work as targeted counters to specific gold units and carry your army once the map gold veins run dry in late Imperial battles.
How much damage bonus does high ground give?
Units on higher terrain deal 25% extra damage while units firing upward lose 25%, a net 66.66% advantage for the high position. Tatars deal +50% from high ground instead of +25%. The Georgian bonus applies to buildings only, which take 40% less damage on higher elevation instead of 25%, and does nothing for their units.
How does Monk conversion actually work?
The engine counts conversion intervals of about 1.25 in-game seconds. Regular units are immune for the first 4 intervals, then face a 38% roll per interval with conversion guaranteed by the end of the 9th. Scout Cavalry and Eagle lines stretch that to 8 through 10 intervals, and buildings only start rolling at the 15th interval at 13% each with a guarantee by the 25th.
