Karma and Threat Escalation
Burglin' Gnomes uses a background system known as the "Karma Board multiplier" to dictate enemy spawn rates and behavioral intensity. This system dynamically adjusts the threat level of the overworld based on your actions.
The Karma Multiplier
Every broken window, smashed television, and triggered trap contributes to your Karma score. If your team plays aggressively and loudly, the multiplier skyrockets.
A high Karma multiplier forces the Director AI to:
- Spawn elite variants of enemies.
- Increase The Old Man's patrol speed.
- Trigger sudden swarm events.
Poorly coordinated teams can accidentally trigger higher threat tiers prematurely, leading to unavoidable wipes.
Balancing High-Gnome Quotas
Managing the Karma Board requires balancing the need to complete destructive High-Gnome tasks against the necessity of keeping the threat level manageable.
If the High-Gnome demands the destruction of a television, the scaling of a kitchen counter, or the tasing of a specific entity, you must expose yourself to risk and increase your Karma score to fulfill the quota. Prioritize these mandatory tasks early in the run before the Karma Board escalates the threat level too high, and use Loot Staging to secure items without further spiking the multiplier until extraction.
