Combat and Juggling
Combat in Castle Crashers relies on mixing light and heavy attacks. Mashing buttons works early on, but you need real combos to survive the later levels and Insane Mode.
Basic Combos
As you level up, you unlock new combos. Your heavy attacks break enemy guards, and light attacks build up fast damage.
- Light, Light, Heavy, Heavy: A standard combo that knocks enemies back.
- Sprint + Heavy: A dash attack that closes the distance quickly.
- Magic Jump: Press your magic button and jump at the same time to launch yourself and nearby enemies into the air.
The Art of Juggling
Juggling is the most vital skill in the game. When you launch an enemy into the air and hit them before they land, they cannot fight back. This keeps you safe from ground attacks and locks down dangerous targets.
To start a juggle, hit a lightweight enemy with a heavy attack to launch them. Jump up after them and use light attacks to keep them airborne. Add a heavy attack at the end of the air combo to slam them back down.
Practice the lightweight juggle combo:
- Jump.
- Light attack twice in the air.
- Heavy attack twice to maintain altitude.
Mediumweight enemies fall faster. Use a Light, Heavy, Heavy rhythm to keep them airborne.
Note on the Green Knight: Prior to the August 2025 Painter Boss Paradise DLC, the Green Knight was unable to execute standard juggles due to a unique, slow backflip animation on his heavy attack. This has been patched out. The Green Knight now functions identically to the rest of the cast.
Using Magic
Magic gives you ranged options and crowd control. The splash magic attack hits multiple enemies in an area. Use it when surrounded.
Each character has different elemental magic. Poison magic does damage over time, while ice magic freezes enemies in place. Ice magic excels at crowd control, making the Blue Knight a strong pick for beginners.
Defense and Insane Mode Survival
Do not forget your shield. Boss attacks hit hard, and blocking is your best tool for survival. Drop your shield to attack, and bring it right back up when the boss winds up a swing.
When you reach Insane Mode, standard ground combat becomes completely unviable due to massive enemy damage multipliers. You must rely on aerial juggling, as enemies cannot initiate attacks while suspended in hitstun, and you remain largely safe from ground-based melee units while airborne. Use shield bashing and magic crowd-control to create openings to launch enemies into the air.
