Getting Started in Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers is a classic beat 'em up where you fight through hordes of enemies, level up, and unlock new weapons and companions. The gameplay loop centers on clearing levels, fighting bosses, and spending experience points to upgrade your knight's stats.

The Core Loop

You fight through side-scrolling stages, defeat enemies to gain XP, and collect gold to buy items. Boss fights test your combat skills. When you beat a boss, you unlock new areas on the map.

You can replay levels to grind XP and gold. This helps if you hit a wall against a tough boss.

Stats Priority

Every time you level up, you get stat points to spend. You have four main stats:

  • Strength: Increases your melee damage.
  • Magic: Unlocks new magic attacks and increases spell damage. Your magical toolkit expands at specific stat investment milestones:
    • 0 Points: Basic Splash Attack.
    • 5 Points: Magic Projectile (focused single-target attack).
    • 10 Points: Air Projectile (cast magic while airborne).
    • 15 Points: Elemental Infusion (apply elemental effect to melee strike).
    • 20 Points: Magic Jump (vertical escape with a damaging hitbox).
  • Defense: Increases your health pool and reduces incoming damage. Your exact maximum health is calculated as: 69 + (Level × 3) + (Defense × 28).
  • Agility: Increases movement speed and bow damage.

Focus on one or two stats early on. Spreading points too thin makes you weak across the board. A high Strength build clears early levels fast, while a Magic build shines once you unlock the splash attack.

First Hours Tips

  • Use your shield: The block button saves you from taking massive damage. You cannot attack while blocking, but it stops enemy combos.
  • Juggle enemies: Hitting enemies in the air keeps them stun-locked. Learn the basic air combos early.
  • Break everything: Attack bushes, chests, and doors. They hide gold, food, and sometimes hidden items.
  • Play with friends: The game is built for co-op. Teammates can revive you if you go down.

The Insane Mode Wall

When you beat the game, you unlock Insane Mode. Do not expect to jump straight in. Insane Mode scales enemy health and damage exponentially. A basic Conehead has 170 HP and enemies can kill a maximum-level player in two hits. You are expected to be Level 50+ with maximized Defense and Strength before tackling it.
