Getting Started with Halo Wars: Definitive Edition

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition brings classic real-time strategy to the Halo universe. Originally built for console, the game relies on a streamlined base-building and unit command system. The Definitive Edition runs natively on PC with mouse and keyboard support, but the core loop remains the same. You build a base on fixed pads, gather supplies, train units, and destroy the enemy.

The Core Loop

The basic flow of any match follows three steps:

  1. Establish your economy. Build Supply Pads as fast as possible. Supplies fund everything from new units to base upgrades.
  2. Tech up. Build Reactors to increase your tech level. Higher tech levels unlock better units and powerful upgrades.
  3. Build an army. Produce a mix of infantry, vehicles, and air units.

Every base has a predetermined number of slots. You cannot place buildings wherever you want. You must choose carefully what goes into each slot. A standard base has enough room for a few Supply Pads, a Reactor or two, and your unit production buildings.

Controller vs Keyboard

The game was designed for an Xbox controller. The radial menus and contextual commands make sense with a thumbstick. If you play on PC, the mouse and keyboard controls work well but feel different from a traditional RTS.

Keyboard Basics

  • Use the mouse to box-select units.
  • Press Q to select Local Units (all units visible on screen).
  • Press E to select Global Units (all units you own across the map).
  • Right-click to issue move or attack orders.
  • Press R to use your unit's secondary ability (the equivalent of the Y button on a controller).

Controller Basics

  • Use the left stick to move the camera.
  • Press A to select a single unit. Hold A to paint a selection circle.
  • Press the right bumper to select all units on screen.
  • Press the left bumper to select all units on the map.
  • Press X to move or attack.
  • Press Y to use the secondary ability.

First Hours Tips

Start with the campaign. The campaign acts as a long tutorial. It introduces you to the UNSC units, the base building mechanics, and the rock-paper-scissors combat system.

Focus on learning the hotkeys or controller shortcuts. Jumping back to your base quickly is a required skill. Press the D-pad down on a controller or use the assigned keyboard shortcut to snap the camera to your headquarters. This saves valuable seconds when you need to queue up reinforcements during a battle.

Do not ignore scouting. Send a Warthog across the map early. Knowing what your opponent is building tells you exactly what units you need to counter them. If you see an Air Pad, start building anti-air units immediately.

Always keep your supply lines active. If you float too many supplies, you are not building enough units or upgrading fast enough. Spend your resources. A massive bank does you no good if your base gets destroyed.

PC Optimization and Troubleshooting

The PC port can be rigid regarding video options and networking. Use these workarounds for common issues:

  • Steam Cloud Desync Bug: If you or your friends get a "Players fall out of sync" error when loading into a multiplayer match, disable Steam Cloud saves for the game. Right-click the game in your Steam Library, go to Properties, and turn off Steam Cloud. This fixes the peer-to-peer handshake issue.
  • Resolution and Texture Glitches: If textures glitch after changing Anti-Aliasing or resolution settings (like swapping from Low to High), restart the game client entirely to apply them properly.
  • Borderless Windowed Mode: The game lacks a native borderless window toggle in the menus. Use the Alt+Enter shortcut to force windowed mode, or set launch options in Steam if you need it.
