Hollow Knight: Early Game Survival & Map Progression Guide
To progress early in Hollow Knight, buy the Forgotten Crossroads map from Cornifer, then visit Iselda in Dirtmouth to buy the Wayward Compass and Quill. Next, defeat the False Knight to gain access to the Vengeful Spirit spell, which opens the path to Greenpath.
Hollow Knight throws you straight into the fallen kingdom of Hallownest with zero hand-holding. Navigating its sprawling labyrinth requires map tools, Soul management, and quick reflexes. Skipping core tools or running blind into unknown biomes will get you killed and drain your Geo fast.
How do you open the map and track your location?
Buy the map for Forgotten Crossroads from Cornifer for 30 Geo, then buy the Wayward Compass and Quill from Iselda's shop in Dirtmouth.
Cornifer sits near the bottom center of the Forgotten Crossroads. Listen for his humming and follow the paper trail on the ground to locate him. Once you buy his map for 30 Geo, head back up the well to Dirtmouth. Iselda opens her shop as soon as you meet her husband. If you leave the Crossroads without meeting Cornifer, Iselda sells the Crossroads map at her shop for 90 Geo.
Equip the Wayward Compass charm at any bench. Without the compass equipped, your location icon will not appear on the map screen. The Quill automatically updates your map with newly explored rooms whenever you sit at a bench.
Priority Purchase: Buy the Lumafly Lantern from Sly in Dirtmouth for 1,800 Geo before exploring pitch-black zones like Deepnest or Stone Sanctuary. Dark rooms are pitch-black barriers requiring the lantern, not standard gameplay obstacles.
What is the best early game progression path?
The mandatory early progression route moves from Forgotten Crossroads through Greenpath to unlock your first major mobility ability.
- Clear Forgotten Crossroads: Head down into the Crossroads, locate Cornifer, and find the main boss arena near the center of the map.
- Defeat False Knight: Beat this armored boss to earn the City Crest and unlock the door to the left of his arena.
- Acquire Vengeful Spirit: Walk left into the Ancestral Mound. The Elder Baldur NPC grants your first spell, Vengeful Spirit.
- Blast the Baldur Barrier: Travel to the far left of the Crossroads and use Vengeful Spirit to kill the giant Baldur blocking the path to Greenpath.
- Defeat Hornet in Greenpath: Follow the mossy paths through Greenpath to challenge Hornet. Defeating her yields the Mothwing Cloak, granting you a horizontal dash.

How does death and Geo recovery work?
Dying leaves a dark Shade at the location of your death and reduces your maximum Soul meter by one third.
To recover your Geo and full Soul capacity, return to the room where you died and attack the Shade until it dies. One or two nail strikes or a single Vengeful Spirit spell will destroy it instantly.
If you die a second time before destroying your Shade, your original Geo is lost forever. If your Shade spawns in a dangerous location or boss room, unlock Confessor Jiji's house at the far right of Dirtmouth using a Simple Key. Jiji summons your Shade directly to her room in exchange for a Rancid Egg.
The Millibelle Banker Trap
Millibelle operates a bank in Fog Canyon where you can store up to 4,500 Geo safely. However, if you deposit more than 2,500 Geo and sit at a bench, Millibelle abandons her stand and steals your funds.
To recover your stolen money with interest, head to the Pleasure House in City of Tears (requires a Simple Key). Millibelle lounges in the hot spring upstairs. Hitting her with your nail causes her to drop all stolen Geo plus approximately 50 percent interest in extra coins.
Before tough boss runbacks like Soul Master in Soul Sanctum, check wall textures for breakable shortcuts. Unlocking the left-side elevator wall bypasses hostile Soul Twisters entirely.
Where do I get the first Simple Key?
Sly sells the first Simple Key in Dirtmouth for 950 Geo after you rescue him from the abandoned house in the bottom right of Forgotten Crossroads.
How do I heal during boss fights?
Hold the Focus button while standing still to spend 33 Soul and heal one mask. Only heal when the boss is stunned, executing a long whiffed animation, or transitioning phases.
Why can't I reach high ledges in Greenpath?
High ledges require the Mantis Claw for wall jumping or the Monarch Wings for double jumping. Return to these locations after exploring Fungal Wastes and Ancient Basin.
