Achievement Guide
I Am Bread has exactly 35 Steam achievements spanning Story Mode completion, A++ mastery across five game modes, and a collection of miscellaneous challenges tied to specific in-game interactions. All 35 achievements shipped with the Version 1.0 launch on April 9, 2015 and were hard-coded into the Steam API at that time. No achievements have been added or removed since launch.
The game's notoriously difficult physics-based controls make many of these achievements genuinely hard to earn. Only 4.1% of players have completed all Story levels, and A++ mastery achievements sit below 1% across the board. A full completionist run takes roughly 35 to 40 hours of highly technical, repetitive gameplay.
Common Achievements
These unlock through normal play or common failure states. Most players earn them within their first few hours.
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Hidden | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| I Am Dead | Become inedible (0% edibility). | No | 68.4% |
| Bunfortunate | Spill the salt. Knock over any salt shaker, found in the Kitchen and Lounge. | No | 58.5% |
| Bready for Anything | Finish a Story level using Magic Marmalade. Requires repeated failure on a single level to trigger the Marmalade spawn. | No | 24.8% |
"I Am Dead" is the most common achievement at 68.4%. Most players earn it accidentally in their first few minutes. "Bunfortunate" is almost as easy. Just bump the salt shaker on the Kitchen counter.
Story Mode Achievements
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Hidden | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| The End is Rye | Complete all seven Story levels (Monday through Sunday). Requires finishing the Petrol Station epilogue and viewing the Surgeon Simulator tie-in cinematic. | No | 4.1% |
| Raconteur | Get an A++ rating on all seven Story levels. | No | <1% |
| Cool Story, Dough | Get an A++ rating on any single Story level. Requires high toasting efficiency, zero floor contact (100% edibility), and a fast completion time. | No | 2.4% |
Mode Completion Achievements
Completion (All Levels)
| Achievement | Mode | How to Unlock | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brie-lliant | Cheese Hunt | Complete all Cheese Hunt levels. The Garden is a major progression blocker due to the Cracker's fragility. | <1% |
| Good All-Rounder | Bagel Race | Complete all Bagel Race levels. | <1% |
| Rye Hard | Rampage | Complete all Rampage levels across all environments. | 3.9% |
| One Giant Leap For Naankind | Zero-G | Complete all Zero-G levels. These unlock sequentially after completing the corresponding Story level. | 1.3% |
A++ Mastery (All Levels)
| Achievement | Mode | How to Unlock | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turophile | Cheese Hunt | A++ on all Cheese Hunt levels. One of the rarest achievements. The SIF glitch is strongly recommended. | <1% |
| High-Roller | Bagel Race | A++ on all Bagel Race levels. Requires flawless racing lines and optimal checkpoint routing. | <1% |
| The Rye of the Tiger | Rampage | A++ on all Rampage levels. Requires meticulous memorization of dense object clusters for maximum combo generation. | <1% |
| The Final Buntier | Zero-G | A++ on all Zero-G levels. The ultimate test of three-dimensional thrust vectoring and fuel rationing. | <1% |
First A++ (Any Level)
| Achievement | Mode | How to Unlock | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Wedge Between Us | Cheese Hunt | A++ on any single Cheese Hunt level. | <1% |
| The Best Around | Bagel Race | A++ on any single Bagel Race level. Purely temporal optimization. | 2.2% |
| Always Baguetting Better | Rampage | A++ on any single Rampage level. | <1% |
| The Flour Is Strong With This Bun | Zero-G | A++ on any single Zero-G level. | <1% |
The "First A++" achievements are a good intermediate goal. Earn one in each mode before attempting full A++ mastery. The Kitchen is the easiest map for all modes.
Spread and Edibility Achievements
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Hidden | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh Slice | Finish a Story level with 100% edibility without using Magic Marmalade. Demands zero floor contact, zero water exposure, and complete avoidance of biological hazards (ants). | No | <1% |
| You Jelly? | Finish a Story level with both sides covered in jam. Locate a jam jar, coat the top side, flip the bread mid-air, coat the bottom side, then reach a heat source. | No | <1% |
| All Buttered Up | Finish a Story level with both sides covered in butter. Same process as "You Jelly?" but with butter. | No | <1% |
| The Walking Bread | Finish a Story level with less than 1% edibility. Toast yourself fully first, then intentionally drag the finished toast across dirty surfaces until edibility reads near 0%, then trigger the level completion. | No | <1% |
"The Walking Bread" is a paradoxical challenge. You must toast the bread to 100% first, then deliberately reduce your edibility to below 1% before the completion transition triggers. This is not about surviving with low edibility. It is about intentionally ruining already-toasted bread.
Strategy Notes
Fresh Slice (100% edibility, no Magic Marmalade): Do this on the Kitchen. Walk along the counter to the toaster without touching anything dirty. The entire route is clean countertop.
You Jelly? and All Buttered Up: You need both sides of your bread coated. Find the spread, roll through it on one side, then flip and roll through again. The Kitchen is easiest because both jam and butter are on the counter.
Interaction and Object Achievements
These require you to interact with specific objects in particular levels. Several are hidden achievements that do not appear in the Steam list until unlocked.
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Hidden | Level | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Party's Over!" | Start the lawnmower. Press the button on the top chassis. | Yes | Garage | 4.7% |
| Joy-rye-der | Start the car. Break the window, reach the steering column, grip and rotate the ignition key. | Yes | Garage | 2.2% |
| "Grooovy" | Start the chainsaw. Locate and manipulate the pull-cord mechanism. | Yes | Garden / Garage | 1.8% |
| Doughny Hawk | Stand upright on the skateboard and ride it for 1 meter as the Wholemeal bread. | No | Bedroom / Garage | 1.4% |
| Shadough of the Colossus | Climb on top of the Garbage Truck in Story mode. Requires rapid vertical scaling before grip stamina depletes. | No | Petrol Station | 1.7% |
| TV Dinner | Break the TV. Push the bowling ball off the shelf to shatter the screen. | No | Lounge | <1% |
| Rye and Dry | Turn on the hair dryer. Scale the vanity and press the power button on the handle. | No | Bathroom | <1% |
| Picky Eater | Use more than one heat source to toast yourself in a single Story run. Partial toasting counts. Touch one source until lightly browned, then migrate to a second source to finish. | No | Any (2+ sources) | <1% |
| The Bread Baron | Stay airborne for over 5 seconds (any mode except Zero-G). Easiest with physics exploits: riding the Kitchen rocket's explosion radius or using the Garden's industrial fan for sustained lift. | No | Any | <1% |
| Bagel Space Program | Launch the rocket. Nudge the small toy rocket in the Kitchen to ignite its thrusters. | No | Kitchen | <1% |
| Bunbreakable | Finish a Cheese Hunt level with 100% integrity (no cracker damage). Requires incredibly slow, methodical movement with perfect deceleration before every landing. | No | Any (Cheese Hunt) | <1% |
| Fuel-Efficient | Finish a Zero-G level using less than 100 fuel. | No | Any (Zero-G) | 1.3% |
The "Doughny Hawk" Exploit
This achievement deserves dedicated documentation because its unlock logic is famously broken. The requirement states you must "stand upright on the skateboard and ride it for 1 meter as the Wholemeal bread." The game engine attempts to calculate "upright" status based on alignment vectors of the bread's four anchor points relative to the skateboard deck. Normal locomotion constantly shifts these vectors, making legitimate balancing practically impossible.
The community-discovered exploit is the only consistent method:
- Locate the skateboard (Bedroom or Garage).
- Approach the skateboard from underneath it, not on top.
- Grip the underside of the board with two corners of the bread.
- The collision meshes overlap, causing the engine to aggressively correct the geometry.
- The skateboard levitates at roughly a 45-degree angle.
- Because the bread's anchor points remain stationary relative to the board during this levitation, the engine erroneously registers the bread as "upright."
- Use analog momentum to drift the levitating board laterally for one meter.
- The achievement triggers.
Do not waste hours trying to legitimately balance the bread on top of the skateboard. The physics detection for "upright" geometry is deeply flawed. The ventral levitation exploit described above is the accepted community method.
Starch Wars Achievement
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Hidden | Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bread Leader | Take out the Starch Destroyer in Starch Wars mode. Destroy 2 dorsal orbs and 1 ventral orb, then fly into the toaster slot on the ironing board boss. | No | 2.7% |
See the Game Modes guide for a full Starch Wars breakdown.
Recommended Completion Strategy
Phase 1: Learn the Controls (Hours 1-3)
- Play through the Kitchen in Story Mode. Do not worry about your grade.
- Use Free Roam on the Kitchen to practice the SIF fling, wall climbing, and corner-grip movement.
- Earn "I Am Dead" (become inedible) and "Bunfortunate" (spill the salt). Both happen naturally.
- Earn "Bready for Anything" by failing a level enough times to spawn Magic Marmalade, then completing it.
- Practice until you can complete the Kitchen without touching the floor.
Phase 2: Story Mode Completion (Hours 3-10)
- Complete all seven Story levels (Monday through Sunday). Earn "The End is Rye."
- Earn hidden interaction achievements as you encounter them: "Party's Over!" (Garage lawnmower), "Grooovy" (chainsaw), "Joy-rye-der" (car ignition).
- Earn "TV Dinner" in the Lounge by pushing the bowling ball off the shelf onto the TV.
- Earn "Rye and Dry" in the Bathroom by activating the hair dryer.
- Earn "Picky Eater" by using two heat sources in one Kitchen run (stove, then toaster).
- Earn "The Bread Baron" (5+ seconds airborne) using the Kitchen rocket explosion or the Garden fan.
- Earn "Bagel Space Program" by nudging the Kitchen rocket.
Phase 3: Mode Completion (Hours 10-18)
- Complete all Cheese Hunt levels ("Brie-lliant").
- Complete all Bagel Race levels ("Good All-Rounder").
