Getting Started in Mini Motorways
Mini Motorways is a game of constraint optimization. Your goal is to connect color-coded houses to matching destinations, building an efficient road network that keeps traffic flowing. The game ends when a destination accumulates too many waiting pins, indicating unmet demand.
The Core Loop
The gameplay follows a predictable, repeating cycle:
- Houses and destinations spawn randomly on the map.
- You connect them using road tiles.
- Cars travel from houses to matching destinations to satisfy demand.
- At the end of each week, you choose an upgrade package.
Your primary objective is to manage the increasing complexity of the city. As time passes, destinations demand more cars, and the map expands to reveal new territory.
Grid Mechanics
While the graphics look smooth and organic, the game operates on a strict grid. You can place roads in eight directions: North, South, East, West, and the four diagonals. Understanding this grid is crucial for tight city planning.
Every road tile you place consumes from your total inventory. Diagonal roads consume exactly one road tile per grid square, the same cost as a straight road, despite covering approximately 1.41x more physical distance. This makes diagonal routing a highly advantageous optimization tool. Always make sure you have enough road tiles to connect sudden spawns.
Demand and Timer Pins
Each destination generates demand over time. When a car arrives, it satisfies a portion of that demand.
If demand outpaces your traffic flow, a timer pin appears over the destination. This pin slowly fills up with a solid color. Once the pin is completely full, the game is over.
You have a brief grace period once a pin appears, but you must act quickly. Re-route traffic, add a motorway, or reduce intersections to increase flow to that specific building.
Early Game Strategies
Focus on these principles during your first few weeks:
- Keep it simple: Only build the roads you absolutely need.
- Avoid intersections: Do not connect every road into a single giant grid. Separate colors wherever possible.
- Stockpile roads: Do not waste tiles on decorative or redundant paths. You need them when the map expands.
- Pause frequently: The game allows you to pause and completely redesign your roads without penalty. Use this to your advantage when a new destination spawns in a difficult spot.
As you survive longer, the game demands more advanced techniques.
