Advanced Wand Mechanics
Once you understand basic triggers and multicasts, surviving the deeper biomes requires exploiting the wand evaluation engine itself. The highest-level optimization techniques involve "Wrapping" and utilizing Greek Letter spells.
Wand Wrapping and Draw Algorithms
The wand evaluation engine operates sequentially, reading spells left-to-right. However, you can exploit this logic using a technique called Wand Wrapping.
If a modifier or multicast spell is placed at the absolute end of a wand's spell queue, and it needs to "draw" another spell to fulfill its requirements, the engine will "wrap" back to the beginning of the queue if there are no spells remaining to its right.
This allows a single cast block to be evaluated and fired twice within the same cycle, before the Recharge Time triggers.
Example of Wrapping: Place a Chainsaw (which drastically reduces recharge time) at the beginning of a wand, followed by your primary projectile, and a Double Cast modifier at the very end.
- The engine reads the Chainsaw.
- It reads the projectile.
- It hits the Double Cast at the end. Since there are no spells to the right, it wraps back to the start and draws the Chainsaw a second time.
This technique "double-dips" the recharge reduction of the Chainsaw and drastically increases your frames-per-second DPS output.
Greek Letter Spells and Infinite Casting
After defeating the High Alchemist boss, you unlock Greek Letter spells (Alpha, Gamma, Tau, Omega, Sigma, etc.). These spells are the cornerstone of endgame wand engineering.
Greek Letter spells do not cast physical projectiles themselves. Instead, they programmatically copy other spells in the wand's inventory based on their specific ruleset:
- Alpha: Copies the first spell in the wand.
- Gamma: Copies the last spell in the wand.
Because Greek Letter spells have infinite uses and low mana costs, you can use them to copy spells with strictly limited charges (such as Black Hole for digging, or Circle of Vigor for healing) without actually consuming the charges of the original spell.
This mechanic is mandatory for creating infinitely sustaining digging and healing wands, which are strict prerequisites for deep exploration beyond the primary vertical path.
