Patch History and Engine Updates

Because Noita's community has created guides over many years, older tutorials often recommend mechanics or alchemy recipes that have since been fundamentally redesigned by Nolla Games.

This timeline outlines the major structural updates to the Falling Sand engine and game content from Version 1.0 through the current environment to help you understand which mechanics are currently active.

Pre-Launch Context (October 2019)

During Early Access, a critical patch added a Worm Crystal to every Holy Mountain. Prior to this, giant tunneling worms would frequently destroy the Holy Mountain brickwork, angering the gods and spawning Stevari without any player input. The Worm Crystal acts as a repellant field, significantly reducing the likelihood of AI enemies ruining a run.

The 1.0 Release (October 2020)

The game formally exited Early Access. This update introduced the final primary biome, The Temple of the Art, and stabilized the core algorithmic generation of the Holy Mountain. It firmly established the vertical biome progression from the Coal Pits down to the final boss arena.

The Epilogue Update (March 2021)

Initially believed to be the final major content update, Epilogue fundamentally expanded the mid-to-late game meta.

  • Overhauled the perk pool and introduced dozens of new spell interactions.
  • Solidified the existence of secret minibiomes outside the main path.
  • Stabilized the mechanics of Parallel Worlds, ensuring the engine could handle horizontal infinity and heavy memory loads without crashing.

The Feast Update (Interim)

This update expanded material interactions significantly, shifting the game closer to a fully realized physical simulation.

  • Introduced Void Liquid, a super-dense liquid that drills through the world based on kinetic density and continuously converts fungus or toxic sludge into more of itself on contact.
  • Added consumption mechanics, allowing players to drink fluids from the environment or flasks to gain a Satiation percentage and specific, long-lasting status effects.

The Epilogue 2 Update (April 2024)

A massive revitalization of the game that fundamentally altered alchemy, fungal shifting, and UI readability.

  • Flask Alchemy Revolution: Prior to this update, all alchemical reactions required materials to be poured out into the open world. Epilogue 2 updated the engine to allow alchemical reactions to occur internally within a held flask, letting you synthesize dangerous compounds safely inside your inventory.
  • Shift Exclusions: Introduced specific hard-coded exclusions for certain material pairs during Fungal Shifts to prevent game-breaking softlocks.
  • Quality of Life: Integrated popular community features, such as enhanced Wand Vacuum mechanics, and introduced hidden variables that improved the readability of complex multi-cast wand trees.
