Hero Mode (Patapon 2)

The Hero unit is Patapon 2's biggest addition. It is a single, customizable Patapon that fights alongside your army with abilities no regular unit can match. The Hero can switch between any class you have unlocked, equip special Masks that alter its stats, and activate Hero Mode during Fever for powerful class-specific attacks.

What the Hero Is

The Hero is a permanent unit that joins your army early in Patapon 2's story. It sits at the front of your formation and fights alongside your squads.

Key differences from regular units:

  • Class flexibility. The Hero can take on any class you have unlocked. Switch it to Tatepon for tanking, Yaripon for damage, Robopon for boss burst. Change classes freely at your base between missions.
  • Masks. The Hero equips a Mask that modifies its stats, appearance, and sometimes its Hero Mode behavior. Masks are earned from the Patagate.
  • Hero Mode. During Fever, maintaining Perfect-quality inputs activates Hero Mode, a class-specific super ability that lasts as long as you keep hitting Perfects.
  • Persistence. The Hero does not die permanently. If it falls in battle, it revives after the mission. Regular Patapons that die are gone unless you create replacements.

Hero Mode Activation

Hero Mode triggers when two conditions are met:

  1. Your army is already in Fever Mode.
  2. You land one perfect command set immediately following Fever activation.

The activating command cannot be a standard march order. You must input a perfect attack, defend, charge, or jump command to trigger Hero Mode. On Hard difficulty, this rule is enforced strictly. March commands are rejected entirely from the Hero Mode activation sequence.

Once active, the Hero glows and performs its class-specific ability automatically alongside your normal commands. Sustaining Hero Mode requires continuous perfect non-march commands. Drop to Good, use a march command, or Miss a beat, and Hero Mode deactivates. Your army stays in Fever, but the Hero loses its powered-up state.

On Easy difficulty, the Perfect window is larger, making Hero Mode much easier to maintain. If you are struggling with Hero Mode uptime, drop the difficulty for practice runs until the timing feels natural.

The Mask System

Masks are equippable items that change the Hero's stats, appearance, and sometimes its passive abilities. You earn them primarily from Patagate runs, though a few come from story missions.

How Masks Work

Each Mask modifies the Hero's base stats with bonuses and penalties:

Notable Mask Lines

Masks follow evolutionary lines. You must acquire the Level 1 mask in a line before the Level 2 version enters the drop pool. This sequential gating means you need to farm lower-tier masks before the best versions become available. Faltering during the egg-cracking rhythm minigame lowers your chance of a mask drop.

The mask pool is large and varies by Patagate boss difficulty. Higher-difficulty Patagate runs drop rarer masks with stronger stat distributions. Farm the hardest Patagate boss you can consistently clear for the best results.

The Patagate

The Patagate is Patapon 2's co-op boss arena. On the PSP original, this was a multiplayer mode. In the 1+2 Replay remaster, your allies are AI-controlled companions.

How It Works

  1. Enter the Patagate from your base.
  2. Select a boss to fight. Bosses range from easy (recolored story bosses) to extremely difficult (unique Patagate-only variants).
  3. You and your AI allies (Komupons) fight the boss together.
  4. Rewards drop based on performance: masks, rare materials, and Parachi (a currency that converts to Kaching).

Patagate Boss Roster

The Patagate roster includes modified versions of campaign bosses plus exclusive encounters:

Dodonga, Majidonga, Kacchindonga, Centura, Darantula, Gaeen, Dogaeen, Manboth, Manboroth, Zaknel, Dokaknel, Shookle, Kanogias, Ganodias, Ciokina, Cioking, Dettankarmen, and Zuttankarmen.

The Grey Rainbow item dropped exclusively by Dettankarmen is mathematically required to unlock the ultimate Zuttankarmen encounter. Farm Dettankarmen until this item drops before attempting to access Zuttankarmen.

Patagate Boss Scaling

Patagate bosses operate on a distinct scaling formula separate from the open world map. Patagate variants start with lower base health pools than their world map counterparts. For example, a world map Goruru has a base HP of 40,000 + 8,000 per level. The Patagate variant of Goruru starts at 30,000 + 3,000 per level.

Difficulty increases dynamically via Star Levels. Higher Star Levels increase health multipliers and modify attack frequency logic, making bosses both tougher and more aggressive.

Patagate Tips

  • Start with Easy bosses. The Patagate has its own difficulty curve. Do not jump to hard bosses until your Hero is geared.
  • Parachi conversion. Each Parachi converts to exactly 5 Kaching when you exit the Patagate. You can choose to spend Parachi on reward chests, or exit without opening them to convert all accumulated Parachi into Kaching. This is the most mathematically efficient Kaching farm in the game.
  • Mask targeting. Specific bosses drop specific mask categories. If you want an offensive mask, farm the boss that drops offensive loot. Check the Patagate menu for drop hints.
  • AI allies are reliable but not optimal. Komupons follow your rhythm commands and fight competently. They lack the strategic foresight to retreat from devastating area-of-effect attacks. Do not expect them to carry. Your Hero does the heavy lifting.

Early Game (Story Missions 1-10)

Class: Tatepon or Yaripon Mask: Whatever you have (default mask is fine) Why: Tatepon Hero Mode (Energy Field) trivializes early boss attacks. Yaripon Hero Mode (Iron Fist) clears enemies fast. Pick based on whether you need defense or offense.

Mid Game (Story Missions 11-20)

Class: Kibapon or Yumipon Mask: Speed-type (Kibadda or equivalent) Why: The Destroyer (Kibapon) one-shots mid-game bosses with good gear. Broken Arrows (Yumipon) handles large enemy groups. Switch between them based on the mission.

Late Game (Story Missions 21+)

Class: Robopon or Tatepon Mask: Best offensive mask (Buzzcrave or equivalent) for Robopon, best defensive mask for Tatepon Why: Iron Storm (Robopon) is the highest DPS Hero Mode for endgame boss fights. Switch to Tatepon with Energy Field for Dettankarmen's one-shot attacks in the final fight.

Post-Game / Achievement Farming

Class: Robopon (damage) or Mahopon (sustainability) Mask: Best available for the fight Why: Robopon melts bosses for fast farming. Mahopon keeps your army alive during long Patagate runs where attrition matters more than burst.

Do not lock yourself into one Hero class for the entire game. The Hero's strength is its flexibility. Swap classes between missions based on what you are about to face. A Tatepon Hero on a boss fight and a Kibapon Hero on a siege mission play completely differently.
