Carpentry and Base Building
Carpentry secures your safe house by letting you barricade windows, build storage, and collect rainwater. Level it fast by reading the skill books before you grind, tuning a TV to Life and Living at 12 PM every day for the first week, and dismantling beds, wardrobes, and wooden chairs with a hammer. Log walls need zero Carpentry skill and only 4 raw logs plus 4 rags, twine, or rope, so put a perimeter up on day one.
Securing a safe house is your top priority after surviving the first week. Carpentry allows you to barricade windows, build storage, and collect rainwater.
Leveling Carpentryโ
You need high Carpentry levels to build useful structures.
- Read the Books: Never grind Carpentry without reading the corresponding skill book first. A fully read volume triples your XP, though only across the two levels that volume covers.
- Watch Life and Living: Tune a TV to Life and Living at 12 PM every day for the first week. Woodcraft airs in that noon slot on each of the first seven days and will carry you to Carpentry level 3 on its own. That is also where it stops, because Build 42 caps what you can learn from media at level 3.
- Dismantle Furniture: Equip a hammer. Right-click beds, wardrobes, and wooden chairs to disassemble them. You gain XP and yield planks, nails, and screws. No saw is needed for furniture, and a stone hammer does the job just as well.
- Saw Logs: Chop down trees with an axe, then use a saw on the logs to turn them into planks, at 3 planks per log.
Barricading Windowsโ
An unbarricaded window takes a zombie as little as 20 in-game minutes to smash through, which is under a minute of real time at default settings and usually longer. You must fortify your base.
- Wooden Barricades: Equip a hammer, nails, and planks. Right-click a window to barricade it. You can place up to four planks on each side of a window, inside and outside, for eight in total, and each plank has to be destroyed separately. One or two planks a side still let you see out. Three or four block your line of sight along with the zombie's.
- Metal Barricades: In Build 42 this needs a Welding Torch, welding rods, iron or steel bars, and Welding level 3. Metal gives far more hit points than wood, 3000 against 1000 per plank, but no barricade actually stops a zombie. It only slows one down.
Keep at least one window on the ground floor unbarricaded but covered by a sheet, or use a door. You need an escape route if the house catches fire or gets overrun.
Essential Base Structuresโ
Carpentry unlocks structures right across the skill range and not at a single milestone. Level 4 gets you the Advanced wooden wall, a straight upgrade on the basic one, but the structures that matter most sit either side of it.
- Rain Collector Crate (Level 3) and Rain Collector Barrel (Level 5): The crate is built from planks, nails, and either garbage bags or a tarp, and holds 400 units. The barrel is the larger version at 600. When the municipal water shuts off, these collect rain for drinking and farming. What they hold is tainted water, so boil it before drinking, or plumb the collector to a fixture, which produces clean water on its own.
- Composters (Level 3): Throw rotten food in here. Over time it becomes fertilizer for your crops, and a second Craftsman composter unlocks at Level 6. Build 41 gave a 10% chance of a worm appearing each time compost formed. Build 42 turned that into breeding instead, so you have to seed the composter with at least two fresh worms yourself, and they will not multiply during winter.
- Log Walls (Level 0): Log walls are the premier early-game defense. They require zero carpentry skill, just 4 raw logs and 4 rags, twine, rope, or sheet rope. They also stay the strongest wooden option you can build, contrary to a common claim. A log wall has 500 hit points plus 50 per carpentry level, reaching 1000 at Level 10, where even the best Craftsman wooden wall tops out at 850. Do not wait to build these. Secure your perimeter immediately.
- Wooden Stairs (Level 6): Build stairs to reach rooftops, then destroy them with a sledgehammer, since they cannot be disassembled. Zombies do not climb, so this denies them the route up. Treat it as strong protection and never immunity: anything you built at ground level is still attackable, and Build 42 has been patching zombie-proofing tricks as bugs.
Welding Infrastructureโ
Once you secure your wooden perimeter, you need to transition to metalwork for advanced fortifications.
Build 42 renamed this skill to Welding. It relies on a Welding Torch, a Welder Mask, and a steady supply of Welding Rods, plus Propane Tanks to refuel the torch. Build 41 called the torch a Propane Torch and the skill Metalworking, and players still use the old names. Build 42 also added blacksmithing as a parallel metal route built around a forge and charcoal, which unlike welding is genuinely renewable.
To level Welding:
- Grab your torch and mask, then head to an abandoned highway.
- Dismantle wrecked vehicles. Build 42 removed the experience from dismantling metal objects and furniture generally, which leaves car wrecks as the only vanilla source, and they realistically carry you to about level 2. Past that, cut scrap into sheets and bars.
- At higher levels you can build Metal Walls, at Welding 3 for the basic tier and Welding 5 for the advanced one. Both also need the recipe from Welder Monthly - June 1993, or the Welder occupation, which is a hard gate that catches people out. They take significantly more punishment than wooden equivalents, at 700 to 800 hit points plus 20 per level.
Frequently Asked Questionsโ
How do you level Carpentry fast in Project Zomboid?
Read the Carpentry skill book first so the XP multiplier applies, then watch Life and Living at 12 PM daily for the first week, which alone takes you to level 3 and is also where media XP caps out. Fill the gaps by dismantling furniture with a hammer, no saw needed, and sawing logs into planks.
What Carpentry level do you need for a rain barrel?
The Rain Collector Crate, built from planks, nails, and either garbage bags or a tarp, needs Carpentry Level 3 and holds 400 units. The larger Rain Collector Barrel needs Level 5 and holds 600.
How many planks can you barricade a window with?
Four on each side, inside and outside, so eight per window, and each plank has to be broken separately. One or two a side still let you see out, while three or four block your view as well as the zombie's.
Are log walls better than wooden walls in Project Zomboid?
Yes, and they stay better. Log walls need zero Carpentry skill and only 4 raw logs plus 4 rags, twine, rope, or sheet rope. A log wall has 500 hit points plus 50 per carpentry level, reaching 1000 at Level 10, where the best Craftsman wooden wall tops out at 850.
How do you level Welding in Project Zomboid?
Build 42 renamed Metalworking to Welding. Take a Welding Torch and welder mask to an abandoned highway and dismantle wrecked vehicles, which is now the only vanilla experience source and carries you to about level 2. Past that, cut scrap into sheets and bars.
