Combat and Weapons
Combat in Project Zomboid is unforgiving. A single mistake leads to a bite, which carries a 100% chance of zombification. This guide covers how to fight efficiently and stay alive.
Melee Combat Fundamentals
Melee weapons are your primary defense. Guns attract too much attention. Follow these rules when fighting up close:
- Backpedal constantly: Never stand still. Walk backward while swinging your weapon. This keeps zombies at maximum range.
- Push over strike: Press
Spacebarto shove a zombie. If it falls over, stand on its chest. A zombie cannot stand up if you are standing on it. - Aim for the head: When a zombie is on the ground, use the spacebar to stomp its head, or swing your weapon down for a lethal blow. Ground strikes do massive damage.
- Isolate targets: Never fight a horde. Lure one or two zombies away by creeping into their visual range, then pull them backward out of sight from the others.
Weapon Categories
Weapons are grouped by skill type. Sticking to one weapon type makes you swing faster and hit harder over time.
- Long Blunt: Baseball bats and crowbars. Excellent durability and crowd control. The crowbar lasts forever, making it the best all-around weapon.
- Short Blunt: Hammers and nightsticks. Common loot that allows you to carry a bag in your secondary hand.
- Axes: Fire axes and hand axes. High damage output, but they consume more stamina per swing.
- Spears: Crafted from branches or planks. Spears have incredible reach and a chance to instantly kill with a critical hit, but they break quickly.
Firearms
Guns are loud. Firing a shotgun in town will draw hundreds of zombies from surrounding blocks.
Save firearms for emergencies or specific clearing operations. If you plan to shoot, pack hundreds of rounds of ammunition and have an escape vehicle running nearby.
In Build 42, firearms use a realistic spread, trajectory, and penetration model. The old strategy of blindly firing a shotgun into a horde at Aiming Level 0 no longer works. Pellets calculate individual vectors, and environmental factors like fog, rain, darkness, and wind severely degrade accuracy. You must use guns tactically, aim carefully, and accept that a low Aiming skill means you will likely only stagger a group rather than execute multiple targets at once.
