Power Grid Failure and Plumbing
The Knox power grid and the municipal water supply both fail within the first 30 days, with water usually going first, so you need independent utilities to keep going. In Build 42 you can run a generator with Electrical level 3, Electrical level 2 if you took the Inventive trait, the Electrician or Engineer occupation, or the How to Use Generators magazine, and it has to sit on an unroofed tile because running one indoors fills the building with toxic fumes and drains your health to 1. For water, plumb an indoor sink to a rain barrel placed exactly one floor above it, with a Pipe Wrench anywhere in your inventory.
Within the first 30 days, the Knox utility grids will fail. On default settings the water supply cuts out on a random day between day 0 and day 30, while the power grid rolls between day 14 and day 30, so water usually goes first even though both options carry the same "0-30 days" label in the sandbox menu. You must establish independent power and water to survive.
Generatorsโ
To restore power to your base, you need a generator.
- The Magazine: In Build 41 you could not connect a generator without reading the "How to Use Generators" recipe magazine first, unless you took the Electrician profession. Build 42 opened this up to five routes: Electrical level 3, Electrical level 2 with the Inventive trait, the Electrician occupation, the Engineer occupation, or the magazine. Electronics stores are far and away the best place to find the magazine, along with generator crates. Mailboxes do carry magazines, but this one turns up in roughly one mailbox in four hundred, so do not plan around them.
- Fuel: Generators require constant refueling. You must siphon gas from abandoned cars using empty Gas Cans, or pump it directly from a gas station. Keep in mind that gas station pumps require electricity to work, so you must bring a generator to the gas station to power the pumps.
- Toxic Fumes Warning: Never run a generator inside a building. The game warns you at placement time that it "will fill the building with toxic fumes when operated here," and running one indoors drives your health down to 1 through the Noxious Smell moodle. It stops short of killing you outright, and stepping outside halts the damage, but you will be in no state to fight anything. Nothing in the game calls this carbon monoxide. What counts as indoors is the engine's room test, meaning walls or frames plus a roof, so any unroofed tile is safe: grass, a driveway, a porch, an open balcony, or a bare rooftop. Build a roof over that rooftop generator and it turns lethal, which is documented behavior and not a quirk.
Plumbing the Rain Barrel (The Z-Axis Rule)โ
When the water shuts off, sinks do not run dry instantly. Most hold up to 20 units in reserve, which you can draw once into a container, and water already sitting in pipes and basins never spoils. After that they are dead, so plumb a sink to a Rain Barrel to get clean water on demand.
The game's isometric perspective makes vertical alignment tricky. The engine requires specific Z-axis placement for plumbing to work:
- The sink has to be inside a building. This is the condition people miss most often, and it is why plumbing silently refuses to work on an outdoor fixture. Wall frames plus a roof are enough to satisfy it, and you can take the frames back down afterward.
- The Rain Barrel must be placed exactly one floor up.
- It must be either directly above the sink or in one of the 8 immediately adjacent tiles above the sink, so a 3x3 area centered over it.
- You need a Pipe Wrench somewhere in your inventory. It does not have to be in your hands or loose in your main inventory, because the game searches your bags too and equips it for you.
Right-click the sink and select the Plumb option, which is labeled with the fixture's own name, so it reads "Plumb White Sink" and not a generic "Plumb Sink". Once plumbed, the fixture produces clean water even though the barrel above it holds tainted rainwater. A single fixture can draw from several collectors, and you can add or remove collectors later without breaking the connection.
Frequently Asked Questionsโ
When does the power go out in Project Zomboid?
Both grids fail within the first 30 days on default settings. Water rolls its shutoff day anywhere from 0 to 30, while electricity rolls between day 14 and day 30, so you normally lose water first. Set up a generator and a rain barrel before either happens.
Do you need a magazine to use a generator?
Not in Build 42. Electrical level 3, Electrical level 2 with the Inventive trait, the Electrician occupation, the Engineer occupation, and the How to Use Generators magazine all work. Build 41 required the magazine or the Electrician profession. Electronics stores are the best place to find it, not mailboxes.
Can you put a generator inside your base?
No. Running one indoors fills the building with toxic fumes and drains your health down to 1, though stepping outside stops it. The rule is about roofs: any tile the game does not read as a roofed room is safe, including grass, a driveway, or an open balcony, and roofing that balcony later makes it lethal.
How do you plumb a rain barrel to a sink?
The sink has to be inside a building, which is the step most people miss. Put the barrel exactly one floor up, either directly above the sink or in one of the 8 tiles adjacent to that spot. Keep a Pipe Wrench anywhere in your inventory, including a bag, then right-click the sink and pick the Plumb option.
Do you still need to boil water from a plumbed rain barrel?
No. Once the sink is plumbed, tainted rainwater from the barrel above is purified automatically as it is dispensed, so the sink gives you clean water on demand.
