Tailoring and Damage Mitigation

A single bite is fatal. While you should avoid getting hit entirely, Tailoring allows you to mitigate the risk of scratches and lacerations, and eventually create bite-proof armor.

The Tailoring Progression Loop

Tailoring requires a Needle, Thread, and Scissors. You level the skill through a repetitive grind:

  1. Rip Clothing: Kill zombies, take their clothes, and rip them into Ripped Sheets, Denim Strips, or Leather Strips.
  2. Collect Thread: Ripping clothes occasionally yields Thread. Higher Tailoring skill increases the chance of finding Thread.
  3. Apply and Remove Patches: To grind XP, find a durable piece of clothing (like a Denim Shirt). Right-click it, select Inspect, and repeatedly apply and remove patches from every body part.

Read the corresponding Tailoring skill books before doing this to multiply your XP gains.

Armor Values and Leather Patches

Patches add defense values to your clothing. The material matters:

  • Ripped Sheets: Low scratch defense, no bite defense.
  • Denim Strips: Moderate scratch defense, low bite defense.
  • Leather Strips: High scratch and bite defense.

The defensive value of a patch scales mathematically with your Tailoring skill.

At Tailoring Level 10, the scaling reaches its peak. Applying Leather Patches to a standard Leather Jacket, Denim Shirt, and Long Johns transforms your standard clothing into highly effective, near bite-proof armor. Do not ignore Tailoring. It is the ultimate late-game safety net.
