Vehicle Mechanics and Logistics

Tactical Quick Answer

Motorized transport is essential past the first month, and hotwiring is how you get a car without keys. Burglars can attempt a hotwire with no skill at all, though success is still a roll and a car in better shape is harder to crack, while everyone else needs Mechanics Level 2 and Electrical Level 1, then sits in the driver seat and presses V to open the radial menu. When you pick a car, read both numbers in the mechanics menu: Engine Quality can never be repaired, but it is Condition below 50 that makes an engine stall on you.

Walking across Knox Country stops being survivable past the first month, once your loot runs reach the next town. A working car is the fix, and getting one usually starts with a hotwire.

Hotwiring Vehiclesโ€‹

If you cannot find the key to a car, you must hotwire it. Check the ignition, the glove box, and the ground nearby, then search the zombies standing around the car and the containers in the nearest building, since keys often spawn on a keyring in one of those.

  • Burglar Profession: Burglars can attempt a hotwire without meeting any skill requirement, but the trait only unlocks the option. It does not guarantee the result. Each attempt rolls against the state of the car, and a car in better shape is harder to hotwire, so a Burglar with no Electrical skill can fail on a pristine engine several times over. A failed attempt costs you no parts and breaks no tools, but it makes noise and can set off the car alarm.
  • Skill Requirements: Non-burglars need Mechanics Level 2 and Electrical Level 1 before the option appears at all. Those two levels unlock the attempt and do not guarantee it, so budget for several tries on a car worth taking.
  • The Grind: For Electrical, dismantling digital watches, radios, and TVs works, but it is the slowest route available at 0.5 XP per device. Dismantling world furniture and appliances pays several times more. For Mechanics, read the skill book, then uninstall and reinstall parts on junk cars. The catch is that the game records experience per part per vehicle, so the same battery on the same car stops paying after the first time. Rotate between cars.

Once you meet the requirements, get into the driver's seat and press V to open the radial menu, then select the hotwire icon. The exterior radial menu you get from standing beside the car offers doors, hood, and trunk only.

Engine Quality vs. Conditionโ€‹

Do not confuse these two metrics when choosing a vehicle.

  • Engine Condition: Represents the durability of the engine as hit points. You can repair this using spare engine parts. Condition is also what makes a running engine cut out on you, because below 50 the engine can stall while you drive.
  • Engine Quality: A stat from 0 to 100 that governs how reliably the engine starts, how much power it makes, how much fuel it burns, and your hotwire odds. You cannot repair or change it. Power is a live number again as of Build 42.20, which fixed engine power being set to the maximum script value instead of its calculated value. Cold starts are where it bites: below quality 65, and only when the air sits at or below 2 degrees Celsius, the game adds a start-failure penalty.

Quality is not a hidden stat, despite what you may have read elsewhere. Click the engine in the mechanics menu and the number is printed at the top right next to the condition, with no skill needed to see it. The car to avoid is not so much the low-quality one as the one with condition under 50, because that is the one that stalls mid-horde.

Maintenance and Physicsโ€‹

Vehicles obey strict physical rules in the engine.

  • Tires: Always keep a Lug Wrench, Jack, and Tire Pump in your trunk. Low pressure risks the tire bursting or coming off entirely, and it slows down towing. What actually costs you grip and acceleration is tire condition and tire type, where performance tires beat regular and regular beat old. You can still drive on a flat.
  • Towing: Build 42.20 rebalanced vehicle speed and towing, and trailers now detach when your turning sharpness or your speed goes too high. Take corners wide and slow with anything hitched behind you.
  • Battery Drain: Leaving the headlights or the radio on while the engine is off will drain the battery, and a dead battery means the car will not start. The heater works the other way around. It only draws power while the engine is running, and it raises your fuel consumption as well.
  • Zombie Damage: Using your car as a battering ram is a bad idea, though the damage is tiered and not blanket. The hood takes the hits first, and your engine is only exposed once the hood is destroyed or missing. The windshield only takes damage past a threshold. Damage scales with the square of your speed, so the same horde at 20 mph and at 60 mph are entirely different propositions. If the engine dies mid-horde you are not trapped: getting out of a stopped vehicle is blocked by walls, fences, and other cars, never by zombies. You are simply very likely to die on the way out.

Frequently Asked Questionsโ€‹

How do you hotwire a car in Project Zomboid?

You need Mechanics Level 2 and Electrical Level 1 for the option to appear, unless you took the Burglar profession, which skips the requirement but not the roll. Sit in the driver seat, press V to open the radial menu, and select the hotwire icon. Standing outside the car gives you a different menu with no hotwire option.

What is the difference between engine quality and engine condition?

Condition is the durability of the engine and you can repair it with spare engine parts. Quality runs 0 to 100, governs starting, power, fuel use, and hotwire odds, and can never be changed. Quality is not hidden either, since the mechanics menu prints it beside the condition when you click the engine.

Why will my car not start in Project Zomboid?

A dead battery is the usual cause, and leaving the headlights or radio on with the engine off drains it. The heater only drains while the engine runs. Cold starts fail when engine quality is under 65 and the air is at or below 2 degrees Celsius, while stalling while driving comes from engine condition under 50.

Should you run over zombies with your car?

Not deliberately. The hood absorbs the damage first, and your engine is only exposed once the hood is gone. Damage scales with the square of your speed, so slow impacts are survivable and fast ones are not. If the engine dies mid-horde you are not trapped, because only walls and fences block you from exiting a stopped car.

How do you level Mechanics and Electrical for hotwiring?

Dismantling watches, radios, and TVs gives Electrical XP but only 0.5 per device, so dismantling world furniture and appliances is much faster. For Mechanics, read the skill book, then uninstall and reinstall parts on junk cars, rotating between vehicles because the game only pays for each part once per car.
