Colony Management
Colony management in RimWorld comes down to holding pawn mood above the mental break threshold. Use the Needs tab to watch food, rest, recreation, comfort, and beauty, and react fast with fine meals, forced recreation, or a small emergency stock of psychite tea. For the long term, build impressive combined dining and rec rooms, upgrade pawns out of the barracks into individual bedrooms, and keep a dedicated cleaner on staff.
Your colony lives or dies based on the mental state of your pawns. A fully armed colonist throwing a tantrum and punching a mortar shell kills more people than most early-game raids. Managing needs and mood is the true core of RimWorld.
The Needs Tabโ
Select any colonist and open their Needs tab. This shows their current mood and the factors driving it.
The primary needs are:
- Food: Keep them fed with cooked meals. Eating raw food costs 7 mood for a day and eating a corpse costs 12.
- Rest: Pawns need sleep. Better beds provide faster rest and improve mood.
- Recreation: Pawns get bored of repetition, not just of idleness. Each recreation type builds its own tolerance, and a pawn stops enjoying a type once tolerance passes half, so provide a variety such as dexterity play, social interaction, solitary relaxation, and television.
- Comfort: Sitting in nice chairs while working or eating keeps comfort high.
- Beauty: Pawns hate ugly environments. Keep rooms clean, smooth rough floors, and place sculptures in high-traffic areas.
- Outdoors: Pawns confined under a roof for too long take a mood penalty for it. A mountain base needs somewhere open for people to walk through.
Preventing Mental Breaksโ
When a pawn's mood drops below their break threshold, they risk a mental break. These range from minor (hiding in their room) to extreme (murderous rage).
Quick Mood Fixesโ
When a pawn is close to breaking, act fast to push their mood up.
- Assign recreation: Force them to play horseshoes or billiards.
- Provide better food: Fine meals and lavish meals give strong temporary mood buffs.
- Drugs: Keep a small stock of psychite tea or smokeleaf joints for emergencies. Set up drug policies so pawns only use them when their mood drops below 35%.
- Change their schedule: Give them a few hours of mandatory recreation or sleep time.
Long-Term Solutionsโ
Stop breaks before they happen by improving baseline mood.
- Impressive Dining and Rec Rooms: Combine your dining and recreation rooms into one large, highly decorated space. A room only displays one role, but it still hands out the moodlet for each role it is actually used for, so eating and relaxing in the same impressive room pays twice. The tiers run up to "wondrously impressive" at +8, one step above "unbelievably impressive" at +7.
- Bedrooms: Upgrade from a barracks to individual bedrooms. A decent bedroom provides a steady, permanent mood boost.
- Cleanliness: Dirt, trash, and blood make rooms ugly. Assign a pawn with a low priority in other tasks to be your dedicated cleaner.
Managing Traitsโ
Every pawn spawns with traits that permanently alter how they behave. You have to build your management strategy around them.
- Pyromaniac: The "Fire Starting Spree" is genuinely mood-independent. Its trigger curve is flat, averaging one spree every 50 days regardless of how happy the pawn is, so a contented pyromaniac will still burn your base down. Being an average and not a countdown, it can fire twice in a week or not for years. Pyromaniacs also cannot fight fires at all. Never let one carry incendiary weapons, and when a spree starts, draft a second pawn to shadow them and put out fires until it ends.
- Volatile / Nervous: These pawns have higher mental break thresholds, and that is what makes them fragile. The stat is the mood level below which a pawn is at risk, so raising it means they start breaking sooner. The default is 35%, Nervous sets it to 43%, and Volatile sets it to 50%. Keep their mood artificially high with better meals or drugs.
- Body Purist: They suffer permanent mood debuffs from any artificial modification, including primitive peg legs and dentures. Do not give them artificial limbs unless absolutely necessary to save their life.
- Bloodlust: These pawns get a mood boost from killing enemies and wearing human leather. They strictly ignore the mood penalty from wearing tainted clothing. Put them on the front lines.
Work Schedulesโ
The default schedule has pawns working all day and sleeping at night. This works early on, but you need to optimize it.
Set two hours of mandatory "Recreation" right before they go to sleep. This makes sure they max out their recreation bar before bed, waking up with a strong mood buff. If you have night owls in your colony, shift their entire schedule so they sleep during the day and work at night to get their specific trait mood bonus.
Frequently Asked Questionsโ
How do I stop mental breaks in RimWorld?
Push mood up before it reaches the break threshold. Force the pawn into recreation like horseshoes or billiards, serve fine or lavish meals, set a drug policy that allows psychite tea or smokeleaf below 35% mood, and give them extra recreation or sleep blocks in their schedule.
What raises baseline colony mood the most?
Combine your dining and recreation rooms into one large decorated space so the two room buffs stack, move pawns from a barracks into individual bedrooms, and assign a low-priority pawn as your dedicated cleaner since dirt, trash, and blood make rooms ugly.
How do I handle a pyromaniac colonist?
Their fire starting spree runs on a hidden timer, so it triggers even at 95% mood. Never let them carry incendiary weapons, and when a spree starts, draft a second pawn to shadow them and put out fires until the episode ends.
Should I give a Body Purist bionics?
Only to save their life. Body Purists take permanent mood debuffs from any artificial modification, including primitive peg legs and dentures.
What is the best schedule setup in RimWorld?
Give every pawn two hours of mandatory recreation right before bed so they max the recreation bar and wake up with a strong mood buff. Flip night owls entirely so they sleep by day and work at night for their trait bonus.
