Items and Synergies

Your survivor's base kit is just the foundation. Items provide the raw power required to beat the game. You acquire items by spending gold to open chests, repairing broken drones, defeating bosses, or interacting with shrines. Every item you pick up stacks infinitely, enhancing its effect with each duplicate you find.

Item Rarities

Items are divided into tiers indicated by the color of their outline and the chest they drop from.

  • Common (White): The foundation of your build. These drop frequently and provide flat stat boosts or simple utility effects. Items like the Soldier's Syringe (attack speed) or Paul's Goat Hoof (movement speed) are universally useful.
  • Uncommon (Green): These offer more complex effects and stronger utility. The Ukulele provides essential chain lightning for crowd control, while the Hopoo Feather grants an extra jump.
  • Rare (Red): Game-changing items that drastically alter your power level. The Brilliant Behemoth makes all your attacks explode for area damage. The 56 Leaf Clover significantly increases elite item drops.
  • Equipment (Orange): Active items that occupy a dedicated slot on your hotbar. You can only carry one equipment item at a time. They have cooldowns and provide powerful, on-demand effects like massive healing or screen-clearing damage.
  • Boss (Yellow): Unique items that drop directly from teleporter bosses. These often synergize heavily with specific playstyles.

Stacking Mechanics

Understanding how items stack is crucial. Most items stack linearly. One Soldier's Syringe gives a 15% attack speed boost. Two give 30%, three give 45%, and so on.

However, some items have diminishing returns or hard caps. The Tougher Times bear gives a percentage chance to block incoming damage. This chance stacks hyperbolically, meaning each additional bear adds less percentage than the last. You can never reach a 100% block chance, no matter how many bears you stack. Always check the exact stacking behavior of an item before investing heavily into it at a 3D Printer.

Synergies

The real power of Risk of Rain Returns comes from item synergies. Combining certain items creates effects far greater than the sum of their parts.

  • On-Hit Chains: Items that trigger "on hit" (like the AtG Missile Mk. 1) can trigger other "on hit" items. A fast-firing survivor with an Ukulele, AtG Missiles, and Sticky Bombs will fill the screen with chaotic damage procs off a single attack.
  • Critical Healing: The Harvester's Scythe heals you every time you land a critical strike. Combine this with the Lens-Maker's Glasses (which increase critical strike chance) to create a self-sustaining healing engine.
  • Crowd Control: The Brilliant Behemoth turns all attacks into explosions. Pair this with the Ukulele's chain lightning to instantly clear massive groups of clustered enemies.

Do not try to build a perfectly balanced character. Lean into your survivor's strengths and the items the game gives you. If you find three attack speed items early, prioritize items that benefit from high attack speed for the rest of the run.
