Sea of Thieves Pirate Legend and Endgame

Tactical Quick Answer

Pirate Legend needs reputation level 50 in any three Trading Companies, the level 50 Promotion purchased from each of those three, and a visit to the Mysterious Stranger. Hitting level 50 alone does nothing, because the Stranger checks for the bought promotions rather than the raw levels. Past Legend, the long game is Athena's Fortune to level 100, Captaincy with its ship milestones and Sovereigns, and Guilds, which run to 1,000 reputation with a Distinction awarded every 100.

Endgame in a game with no gear is a strange idea. There is no better sword waiting at Pirate Legend. What is waiting is access, a hideout, a different set of voyages, and a much longer list of things to chase.

The exact Pirate Legend requirements

Three steps, and the second is the one people miss:

  1. Reach reputation level 50 in any three Trading Companies.
  2. Buy the level 50 Promotion from each of those three companies.
  3. Speak to the Mysterious Stranger in any outpost tavern.

Reputation alone does not register. The Stranger checks purchased promotions, so a player sitting at level 60 in three companies who never bought anything is not a Legend and will be told so.

danger

Pirate Legend is impossible in Safer Seas. Every Trading Company there caps at rank 25, which is half of what the first requirement needs.

Which three companies are fastest?

Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, in most cases. All three have representatives at every outpost, all three have stackable voyages, and their loot can be gathered on the same island run.

Athena's Fortune cannot count toward it, since you need Legend status to access Athena's in the first place. Reaper's Bones can count, but selling to Reaper's diverts reputation away from the other companies you are trying to level, which slows the whole thing down.

What Legend actually unlocks

Athena's Fortune, the sixth reputation company, running to level 100 like the rest.

The Pirate Legend hideout, reached through the tavern. It has its own shops, its own atmosphere, and a tunnel entrance most new Legends walk past twice before finding.

Athena's voyages, which are long mixed voyages combining every other company's objectives into a single chain. They pay in Athena's treasure, and they take real time.

The Legendary cosmetic sets and titles, which are the actual point for most people.

Captaincy

Buying a ship makes it yours permanently. A captained ship gets:

  • A name you pick, shown to everyone.
  • Persistent cosmetics that stay applied between sessions.
  • Milestones, which track everything that ship has done, from distance sailed to treasure sold to kraken encounters.
  • Trinkets, small decorative items you place around the ship's interior.
  • Sovereigns, the pier-side treasure handover that saves you carrying every item across an outpost.

Sovereigns alone justify Captaincy. Selling a full Galleon hold the old way means dozens of individual walks to separate NPCs. With Sovereigns you hand it all over where you docked.

tip

Milestones are the most under-appreciated progression track in the game. They tick up passively from things you already do, they unlock commendations and cosmetics, and they give a solo player a genuine long-term goal that does not require another crew.

Guilds

Guilds are shared progression across a group of players, and they run far deeper than most players realize.

DistinctionOne per 100 guild reputation
Emissary bonusUp to 75 percent at Grade 5

To create one you must be a Captain with at least one captained ship, which gets pledged to the guild. The creator becomes Owner, and can appoint Guild Leaders and Guildmates with configurable permissions. Only the Owner can rebrand the guild or transfer ownership.

The Guild Chronicles and Ledger track member enrollment, rewards unlocked, and ship activity, including who sailed, how much gold they earned, and how much reputation they contributed. It is a genuine activity log, and it is the reason guilds work as a social structure rather than just a shared bar.

Distinction levels unlock exclusive cosmetics and commendations, and monthly guild ledger rankings pay out titles and cosmetics of their own.

So what is the endgame, really?

There is no raid tier and no gear check. The long game is four overlapping tracks:

  1. Reputation to 100 across all six companies.
  2. Commendations, which are the largest and most varied list in the game and gate most of the best cosmetics.
  3. Milestones and Captaincy, which reward playing rather than winning.
  4. Guild Distinction, which rewards a group playing together over months.

Players who burn out usually did so chasing gold, which stops meaning anything once you can afford what you want. Players who stay are chasing commendations, and there are always more of those.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you need to become a Pirate Legend?

Reputation level 50 in any three Trading Companies, the level 50 Promotion bought from each of those three, and a conversation with the Mysterious Stranger in an outpost tavern. The purchased promotions are what the Stranger checks, not the raw reputation levels.

Can Athena's Fortune count toward Pirate Legend?

No. Athena's Fortune only becomes available after you are already a Pirate Legend, so it cannot be one of the three companies. Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance are the usual three because all have outpost representatives and stackable voyages.

What are Sovereigns and why do they matter?

Sovereigns let captained crews hand treasure over at the pier where the ship docks instead of walking each item to individual company NPCs across the outpost. On a full Galleon hold this turns dozens of separate trips into one handover for identical gold.

How many guilds can you join in Sea of Thieves?

Three at once, with up to 30 members in each. Guild reputation runs to 1,000 and awards a level of Distinction every 100 reputation, and the guild emissary bonus reaches 75 percent at Grade 5.

What is there to do after reaching Pirate Legend?

Athena's Fortune to level 100, the commendation list which gates most of the best cosmetics, Captaincy milestones that tick up from normal play, and Guild Distinction across 1,000 levels. There is no gear tier, so every remaining goal is cosmetic or social.
