Artisan Processing Optimization

Transitioning from selling raw crops to processing them into Artisan Goods is the primary wealth generation engine in Stardew Valley. However, treating crop processing as a binary choice without understanding the underlying math will cost you millions of gold in the endgame.

You must optimize your production lines based on the exact algorithmic differences between Preserves Jars, Kegs, and Casks.

Preserves Jars vs. Kegs

The choice between putting a crop into a Preserves Jar or a Keg depends entirely on the base value of the raw crop.

The Preserves Jar Algorithm

A Preserves Jar calculates the value of its processed good (Jelly or Pickles) using a flat addition formula: (Base Item Value * 2) + 50g

Because the Preserves Jar relies heavily on that flat 50g addition, it is mathematically optimal for low-value, high-yield crops.

Optimal Preserves Jar Crops:

  • Blueberries
  • Cranberries
  • Tomatoes
  • Blackberries / Salmonberries

The Keg Algorithm

Kegs rely on categorical multipliers based on the item type, with no flat addition:

  • Fruit base value is multiplied by 3 (producing Wine).
  • Vegetable base value is multiplied by 2.25 (producing Juice).

Because the Keg relies purely on percentage multiplication, it is strictly superior for high-value crops. The flat 50g from a Preserves Jar becomes mathematically irrelevant when multiplying a massive base value.

Optimal Keg Crops:

  • Ancient Fruit
  • Starfruit
  • Melons
  • Pumpkins

The Threshold Rule: As a general rule of thumb, if a crop's base value is greater than 50g, put it in a Keg. If it is 50g or less, put it in a Preserves Jar.

The Cellar and Casks

Upgrading your Farmhouse to its maximum size (Level 3) unlocks the Cellar. The Cellar comes equipped with Casks, the only processing unit in the game capable of elevating Artisan Goods to Iridium quality.

Casks age products over a long period. Aging a product to Iridium quality doubles its base value.

Aging Optimization

Because aging takes a significant amount of time (e.g., Wine takes 56 days to reach Iridium quality), you must prioritize your most valuable goods.

Do not waste Cask space on standard cheese or cheap wine. Your Cellar should be exclusively reserved for Starfruit Wine or Ancient Fruit Wine.

  1. Grow Starfruit (Summer) or Ancient Fruit (Greenhouse/Ginger Island).
  2. Process the fruit in Kegs to create Wine.
  3. Place the Wine in Casks in the Cellar.
  4. Wait exactly two full seasons (56 days) for the silver star to turn purple (Iridium).
  5. Strike the Cask with your Hoe to extract the Iridium Wine and maximize your profit.
