Farming and Crops

Farming is the core engine of your Stardew Valley economy. Mastering crop rotation, fertilizer use, and automated watering is essential for building a profitable farm.

Crop Mechanics

Every crop operates on a strict schedule. You buy seeds, plant them in tilled soil, water them daily, and wait for them to mature.

The 28-Day Season

Every season (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) lasts exactly 28 days. When a season ends, all seasonal crops instantly wither and die. You must calculate growth times before planting. If a crop takes 4 days to grow, and you plant it on the 25th, it will die on the 1st of the next season before you can harvest it.

Crop Quality

Harvested crops come in four quality tiers: Normal, Silver, Gold, and Iridium. Higher quality crops sell for more gold and restore more energy when eaten.

You increase your chances of harvesting high-quality crops by leveling up your Farming skill and using fertilizers.

  • Basic Fertilizer: Increases the chance of Silver and Gold quality crops. Craft it using Sap. Apply it to tilled soil before the seed sprouts.
  • Quality Fertilizer: Greatly increases the chance of high-quality crops. Craft it using Sap and any Fish.

Multi-Harvest Crops

Some crops, like Green Beans, Blueberries, and Cranberries, continue to produce after the initial harvest. You plant them once, wait for them to mature, and then harvest them every few days for the rest of the season. These are highly profitable but require a significant upfront investment.

Automating with Sprinklers

Watering crops by hand consumes massive amounts of energy and time. Your primary goal in the early game is to transition to automated sprinklers.

Sprinkler TypeRangeMaterials Required
Basic Sprinkler4 adjacent tiles (cross pattern)1 Copper Bar, 1 Iron Bar
Quality Sprinkler8 adjacent tiles (3x3 grid)1 Iron Bar, 1 Gold Bar, 1 Refined Quartz
Iridium Sprinkler24 adjacent tiles (5x5 grid)1 Gold Bar, 1 Iridium Bar, 1 Battery Pack

Skip the Basic Sprinkler. It is highly inefficient and wastes resources. Push deep into the Mines to secure Iron and Gold, and craft Quality Sprinklers. A grid of Quality Sprinklers frees up your entire morning and saves your energy for mining or fishing.

Seasonal Recommendations

Focus on these crops to maximize early-game profits:

  • Spring: Potatoes have a chance to yield multiple crops per harvest. Strawberries (bought at the Egg Festival) are the most profitable crop if planted immediately.
  • Summer: Blueberries dominate summer profits. Plant them on Summer 1 and harvest them continuously.
  • Fall: Cranberries are the highest-earning crop for fall. Pumpkins are excellent for high-value single harvests and are required for the Community Center.
  • Winter: You cannot grow standard crops in winter outdoors. Use this time to upgrade your watering can and restructure your farm layout. You can grow Winter Seeds (foraged items) for profit.
