Fishing Mechanics

Fishing is one of the most profitable early-game activities in Stardew Valley. It requires fast reflexes and pattern recognition, but mastering the minigame unlocks a massive source of income and essential Community Center bundles.

The Fishing Minigame

When a fish bites, the minigame triggers. You must keep the fish icon inside your green "fishing bar" until the progress meter on the right fills completely.

  • Click or Hold: Click or hold the action button to raise the bar. Release it to let the bar fall.
  • Momentum: The bar bounces when it hits the top or bottom of the interface. Tap the button rapidly just before it hits the bottom to cushion the fall and prevent a bounce.
  • Perfect Catches: If the fish never leaves your green bar during the minigame, you achieve a "Perfect" catch. This increases the quality of the fish by one tier (e.g., Gold becomes Iridium) and doubles the experience points gained.

Fishing is notoriously difficult at Level 0. As you level up the Fishing skill, your green bar becomes significantly larger, making the minigame much easier. Do not give up early.

Rods, Bait, and Tackle

Upgrading your fishing rod is critical for catching rare and legendary fish. You buy upgrades from Willy's shop on the beach.

Fishing Rods

  1. Bamboo Pole: Your starting rod. Cannot use bait or tackle.
  2. Fiberglass Rod: Unlocked at Fishing Level 2. Allows you to attach Bait, which makes fish bite significantly faster.
  3. Iridium Rod: Unlocked at Fishing Level 6. Allows you to attach both Bait and Tackle.

Essential Tackle

Tackle provides passive bonuses during the minigame. They wear out after a certain number of uses.

  • Trap Bobber: The best tackle for difficult fish. It causes the progress bar to decrease significantly slower when the fish escapes your green bar.
  • Cork Bobber: Increases the size of your fishing bar. Excellent for ensuring Perfect catches on predictable fish.
  • Lead Bobber: Prevents your fishing bar from bouncing when it hits the bottom. Useful for erratic fish that dive suddenly.

Seasons, Weather, and Time

Fish availability is dictated by three factors: season, weather, and time of day.

For example, you can only catch a Catfish in the river during Spring or Fall, and only when it is raining. Conversely, a Pufferfish only appears in the ocean during Summer afternoons on sunny days.

Always check your television for the next day's weather. If it rains, prioritize fishing or mining over other tasks, as rain provides access to unique fish and waters your crops for you.

Crab Pots

At Fishing Level 3, you unlock Crab Pots. Place them in the water and load them with bait. Check them the next day for a guaranteed catch (either a crustacean, mollusk, or trash).

Crab Pots provide a slow but steady stream of passive income and fishing experience. The items caught in Crab Pots (like Lobsters and Crabs) are required for the Crab Pot Bundle in the Community Center. If you hate the fishing minigame, Crab Pots are an alternative way to level up the skill.
