Mining and Combat

Mining provides the raw materials necessary to upgrade your tools, craft sprinklers, and process Artisan Goods. The deeper you go, the better the loot, but the monsters become significantly more dangerous.

The Mines

The Mines, located in the mountains north of Pelican Town, consist of 120 floors. You progress by breaking rocks to find the ladder leading to the next floor.

An elevator saves your progress every 5 floors (5, 10, 15, etc.). Always aim to reach the next elevator checkpoint before leaving the Mines for the day.

Resource Nodes

The Mines are divided into three distinct sections, each offering different primary ores:

  • Floors 1-39: Copper Ore (Brown rocks). You encounter Slimes, Bats, and Bugs.
  • Floors 40-79: Iron Ore (Grey rocks). You encounter Frost Jellies, Dust Sprites, and Ghosts. The environment is frozen.
  • Floors 80-119: Gold Ore (Gold-flecked rocks). You encounter Lava Crabs, Shadow Brutes, and Metal Heads. The environment is volcanic.

Floor 120 contains a unique reward, not a ladder.

Mining Strategy

  • Watch the TV: Only enter the Mines on days when the Fortune Teller predicts good luck. High luck increases the chance of finding ladders quickly and discovering valuable gem nodes.
  • Bring Food: Never enter the Mines without a large stack of food. Field Snacks, Forageables, or basic cooked meals are essential. If your health reaches zero, you pass out, lose gold, and permanently lose random items from your inventory.
  • Use Bombs: Once you unlock the recipe, use Cherry Bombs and standard Bombs to clear massive clusters of rocks instantly. This saves immense amounts of energy and time.

Combat Mechanics

Combat in Stardew Valley is simple but requires timing. You swing your weapon to deal damage and knock monsters backward.

Weapon Types

  • Swords: The most balanced weapon type. They swing quickly in a wide arc. Their secondary attack is a defensive block that negates damage and knocks flying enemies back.
  • Clubs/Hammers: Slow but powerful. Their secondary attack is an area-of-effect slam that deals massive damage to surrounding enemies.
  • Daggers: Fast, stabbing weapons. They have a narrow hitbox and do not knock enemies back effectively. Their secondary attack is a rapid multi-stab.

Always prioritize Swords or Clubs over Daggers for general exploration.

The Skull Cavern

Once you reach the bottom of the Mines and repair the bus to the Calico Desert, you unlock the Skull Cavern.

The Skull Cavern has no elevator. You start at Floor 1 every time you enter. The monsters hit significantly harder, and the layout is larger. This is the primary source of Iridium Ore, which becomes more common the deeper you descend.

Surviving the Skull Cavern

  • Bring Staircases: Craft Staircases using 99 Stone. Use them instantly to bypass infested floors or long, spiral layouts.
  • Stack Bombs: You cannot afford to mine rocks individually with a pickaxe here. Bring dozens of Mega Bombs and blow up large clusters to find the ladder or shaft down.
  • Healing Items: Bring food that heals massive amounts of health in a single bite, such as Cheese or Salad.
  • Buff Food: Eat Spicy Eel (for speed and luck) or Crab Cakes (for speed and defense) before entering. Buffs do not stack. Eating a new buff food overrides the previous one. Drink Coffee or Triple Shot Espresso, as drink buffs stack with food buffs.
