Boss Progression
Bosses gate your progress in Terraria. Defeating them unlocks new NPCs, new ores, and access to new areas. You cannot skip them. This guide outlines the recommended order to tackle the major bosses before the game permanently changes in Hardmode.
Pre-Hardmode Roadmap
Your initial goal is to clear the early hurdles to unlock better gear. Start with the Eye of Cthulhu.
The Eye of Cthulhu
This is typically your first boss. It spawns randomly at night once you reach at least 200 health, have more than 10 defense, and have at least 4 town NPCs. If you are not ready to fight it, you can temporarily unequip armor to lower your defense to 10 or below, which pauses the spawning condition. You can also summon it manually using a Suspicious Looking Eye. Build a long, flat wooden platform above the ground to fight it. Running in a straight line while firing ranged weapons makes the fight simple. Defeating it drops Demonite or Crimtane ore.
Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu
Your next target depends on your world type. If your world has Corruption, you fight the Eater of Worlds. If it has Crimson, you fight the Brain of Cthulhu. Head to the respective biome and smash three glowing orbs or hearts found deep underground using bombs or a hammer.
These bosses drop Shadow Scales or Tissue Samples. You need these materials, combined with Demonite or Crimtane bars, to craft a Nightmare or Deathbringer pickaxe. This pickaxe allows you to mine Hellstone later.
Skeletron
Head to the Dungeon on the far side of the map. Talk to the Old Man outside at night and select "Curse" to summon Skeletron. You must defeat him before entering the Dungeon. If you enter the Dungeon without killing him, the Dungeon Guardian instantly kills you.
Skeletron requires high mobility. Build multiple layers of platforms and use a grappling hook to dodge his flying skull attacks. Defeating him grants full access to the Dungeon, which contains essential accessories and weapons.
Interpreting Cryptic Messages
The game uses colored text prompts in chat to signal impending boss spawns or events. For example, if you see the message "You feel an evil presence watching you...", the Eye of Cthulhu will spawn at exactly 8:51 PM. If you are unprepared, immediately descend into the Cavern layer to evade the encounter.
Entering Hardmode
Once you have explored the Dungeon and mined Hellstone in the Underworld to craft Molten armor, you are ready for the Wall of Flesh.
The Wall of Flesh is the final Pre-Hardmode boss. To summon it, you must drop a Guide Voodoo Doll into a pool of lava in the Underworld. Voodoo Demons occasionally drop these dolls.
Before summoning the boss, build a massive bridge across the Underworld out of ash blocks or platforms. The Wall of Flesh sweeps across the screen from one side to the other, forcing you to run backward while fighting it. If you hit the edge of the world or let it touch you, you die.
Defeating the Wall of Flesh instantly activates Hardmode. The world immediately generates a massive diagonal stripe of Hallow and a new stripe of Corruption or Crimson. Hardmode introduces much tougher enemies, mechanical boss variants, and powerful new ores. The difficulty spike is severe. Prepare your base and farm necessary items before making the jump.
