Combat Classes

Terraria has no formal class selection screen. Your class is defined entirely by the armor you wear, the accessories you equip, and the weapons you swing. You can swap between playstyles at any time by changing your loadout. This guide covers the four main damage types and how to optimize your character for each.

Melee Class

The Melee class boasts the highest defense and focuses on close-quarters combat. You primarily use swords, yoyos, spears, and boomerangs.

Melee armor sets offer massive defensive stats to compensate for how close you must get to enemies. When building a melee character, focus on accessories that increase your attack speed and survivability. The Feral Claws increase your melee speed significantly and enable autoswing for all melee weapons and whips, making short-range weapons much more effective and reducing physical strain. Late-game melee weapons often fire projectiles, which helps solve the class's lack of range.

Ranged Class

The Ranged class deals consistent damage from a safe distance using bows, guns, and launchers.

Ranged armor sets boost critical strike chance and reduce ammo consumption. You trade the high defense of melee for the ability to kite enemies off-screen. Always carry a dedicated ammo slot filled with high-tier arrows or bullets. Accessories like the Ranger Emblem and Magic Quiver boost your damage output. A good ranged build requires you to farm for materials constantly to keep your ammo reserves stocked.

Magic Class

The Magic class relies on a mana pool to cast spells, fire lasers, and drop meteors on enemies. Magic weapons offer massive area-of-effect damage and unique crowd control capabilities.

Magic armor increases your maximum mana and reduces mana usage costs. You have very low defense, making you highly vulnerable if enemies get close. Mana management is the biggest challenge for this class. You must collect 5 fallen stars at night to craft a single Mana Crystal, which permanently increases your mana pool. Keep a stack of Mana Potions on your hotbar during boss fights. The Mana Flower accessory automatically consumes these potions for you when your mana runs out.

Summoning Class

The Summoning class uses staves to summon minions that automatically attack enemies for you. You also use whips to direct your minions and increase their attack speed.

Summoner armor sets increase your maximum minion count and boost summon damage. This class has the lowest defense in the game. You must rely entirely on dodging while your minions do the work. Accessories like the Pygmy Necklace let you summon additional minions. This playstyle requires extreme spatial awareness because taking a single hit often drops you to half health.

Mixing Classes

In the early game, you can easily mix and match weapons from different classes. As you transition into Hardmode, enemies gain massive health pools. Mixing classes stops working. You must specialize in a single damage type to deal enough damage to survive. Pick a class, craft the specific armor set for it, and reforge your accessories to grant damage or critical strike bonuses.
