Fishing and Alchemy
Fishing is not merely a supplementary minigame within Terraria. It is a vital engine for generating resources, potions, and advanced traversal gear. Combined with a well-stocked botanical farm, fishing allows you to bypass tedious mining and synthesize elixirs that fundamentally alter the mathematical limits of your combat capabilities.
Fishing Mechanics and the Angler
To begin fishing, you need a fishing pole and bait. The Merchant sells the Bug Net, which you use to catch fireflies, worms, and grasshoppers.
Once equipped, cast your line into a large body of liquid (at least 75 connected tiles of water, lava, or honey).
The Angler NPC
The Angler is a unique NPC found sleeping on the beach at either the far left or right edge of the world. Once awakened and housed, he offers one daily fishing quest. These quests reward you with exclusive fishing accessories, bait, and currency.
Consistently completing these quests is critical. The engine awards the Glorious Golden Pole, an elite fishing rod, specifically upon completing the 30th Angler quest with a single character.
Fishing Crates
Fishing yields consumable fish, but it also yields crates. Wooden, Iron, and Gold crates contain large amounts of raw ores, bars, and accessories. A highly optimized strategy involves hoarding crates during Pre-Hardmode and opening them immediately after defeating the Wall of Flesh to instantly acquire Hardmode ores without ever swinging a pickaxe.
Botanical Automation
Potions require bottled water, a fish, and specific herbs. Relying on naturally generating herbs is inefficient. You must establish an automated botanical farm.
Craft Clay Pots or Planter Boxes (purchased from the Dryad) and lay them out in long rows. Plant the seeds of various herbs. You must wait for the herbs to bloom before harvesting them to retrieve both the fully grown plant and replacement seeds.
Blooming Conditions
The game engine strictly governs when herbs bloom based on environmental and temporal conditions:
- Daybloom: Blooms during the day.
- Moonglow: Blooms at night.
- Blinkroot: Blooms randomly and emits a blinking light when ready.
- Deathweed: Blooms during a Blood Moon or a Full Moon.
- Waterleaf: Blooms only when it is raining.
- Fireblossom: Blooms only between 3:45 PM and 7:30 PM (unless in the Underworld where it blooms constantly).
- Shiverthorn: Takes a long time to grow, but stays blooming permanently once ready.
With a stable supply of fish and herbs, you can craft essential combat buffs like the Ironskin Potion, Endurance Potion, and Lifeforce Potion, which are mathematically required to survive late-game boss encounters on higher difficulties.
