Game Modes
Tricky Towers tests your building skills across three distinct game modes. Each mode requires a completely different approach to piece placement and spell usage. A strategy that wins in one mode guarantees failure in the others.
This guide breaks down the rules for each mode and the tactics you need to win.
Race Mode
The objective in Race mode is simple: build a tower tall enough to cross the finish line before your opponents.
Speed is critical, but reckless speed kills. You must balance the urge to stack fast with the need for a stable foundation. If your tower falls, the time you lose cleaning up the mess and rebuilding is almost impossible to recover against skilled opponents.
- Go Wide Early: Spend your first few pieces building a strong, three-block-wide foundation. This costs a few seconds early on but saves you from a catastrophic collapse near the finish line.
- Save Defensive Magic: Do not use light magic (like vines or stone) early in the race. Save it for the final sprint across the finish line. Locking in a shaky top section right before crossing the line secures the win.
- Weaponize the Wind: Dark magic is most effective when your opponent's tower is tall and swaying. Wait for the wind to pick up or for them to make a precarious placement, then hit them with a giant or slippery block.
Survival Mode
Survival mode flips the script. Height does not matter. The goal is to keep your tower standing longer than anyone else.
You start with a set amount of health (hearts). Every time a block falls off your tower into the water, you lose a heart. When you run out of hearts, you are eliminated. Last player standing wins.
- Stack Tight: Gaps are your enemy. Use the nudge mechanic constantly to wedge blocks tightly together. A dense tower absorbs impact better and resists the wind.
- Counterweight Everything: Pay constant attention to your tower's center of gravity. If you are forced to place a piece hanging off the right side, immediately prioritize placing weight on the left side to compensate.
- The Petrify Save: The petrify spell is your best friend in Survival. If a large section of your tower begins to slide, cast petrify immediately to freeze it in place. It burns a spell, but it saves your hearts.
Puzzle Mode
Puzzle mode throws out the timer and the height requirement. Instead, you face a horizontal laser line. Your goal is to stack a specific set of blocks as compactly as possible entirely below the laser.
This mode plays out like a spatial jigsaw puzzle. Efficiency and tight placement are everything.
- Save the Straights: Do not waste long, straight blocks ("I" blocks) on early, easy placements. Save them for the absolute bottom gaps. If you fill the lowest gaps with awkward shapes, you lose the foundational space you need later.
- Flatten the Top: Always aim to create a flat, level surface across the top of your structure before starting a new layer. This prevents awkward ledges that force blocks over the laser line.
- Restart Aggressively: In solo puzzle trials, if your foundation is messy, restart immediately. You cannot recover a bad start in Puzzle mode. You need every pixel of space.
