Tricky Towers Tips and Tricks

Each entry below is one mechanic, what it costs you, and the patch it was last checked against. Filter by category or difficulty to narrow the list, and use the anchor beside any heading to link straight to a single tip.

Difficulty

Controls

#Nudge shoves harder than the ordinary move keys

New PlayerMovement

U and I on a keyboard, or the shoulder buttons on a controller, force a brick sideways into a gap that looks too tight for it. Bricks never lock to a grid in this game, which makes nudging the only way to repair an uneven layer after the fact.

Hearts

#A collapse costs one heart however many bricks it dumps

New PlayerSurvival

You have three, and you are eliminated at zero, but losing five bricks in one slide is not five hearts. That makes a big controlled collapse survivable in a way most players assume it is not. The light spell Extra Life can also give one back.

Puzzle

#Special difficulty starts you on divided ground, which is an advantage

AdvancedBuildingMultiplayer

For the 20-brick puzzle achievement, use a multiplayer Puzzle match on Special. It is not that Special deals more bricks. It is that nudging pieces into the gaps in that broken starting ground builds a far wider foundation than the solid platform on Easy or Normal.

Stacking

#A sealed flat surface is the worst thing you can build

New PlayerBuilding

Every other block game rewards it, and this one punishes it, because a flat top leaves nowhere to insert the next brick. Keep slots open, leave roughly two blocks of clearance above your straight pieces, and expand sideways instead of upward.

#Park awkward shapes high and keep the low slots open

IntermediateBuilding

There is no hold, because the piece sequence is fixed, so the only way to have room for a long straight is to have left room for it. Capping a low straight with a square is the classic way to wall yourself in with nowhere left to build.

#A straight brick stood on its end is a pedestal on a pivot

New PlayerBuilding

On its end it has almost no footprint, and capping it with a square puts weight on top of that pivot. It looks like a clever way to fill a gap and it is the fastest way to lose a tower that was otherwise stable.

#Build as wide as the mode allows, not to a brick count

IntermediateBuilding

Strong players use the full width of the starting platform rather than aiming at a target number. A narrow foundation turns the tower into a pendulum that sways under its own weight, while a wide one leaves room to recover from one bad piece.

Spells

#Auto Build, Super, and Super Duper only reach players who are behind

IntermediateProgression

The game says so outright in each spell description, so a lead you never lose means three spells you never see. It also means the All-round magician achievement, which asks you to use every spell once, cannot be finished while you are winning.

Survival

#Survival Special is not endless, it stops at 66 bricks

IntermediateProgression

It finishes there or when one player is left standing, usually before wave 8 ever arrives. The genuinely endless version is the separate single-player Endless Survival Challenge, which is where the Survivor achievement is actually worth chasing.

Trials

#A trial deals the identical piece order every attempt

New PlayerProgressionSolo

Retrying with small adjustments is the intended method rather than an admission of failure, because you are learning a fixed sequence rather than fighting randomness. This holds for trials only, since you cannot restart a multiplayer round.

Verified on 1.21

#Trial tiers open on medal count, not on finishing every trial

New PlayerProgressionSolo

Apprentice needs 8, Pro 17, Expert 26, and Master 36 across the 50 trials, so a handful you cannot crack never blocks the next tier. Alongside them sits Endless, with separate Race, Puzzle, and Survival challenges carrying their own leaderboards.

Ranked

#The online rank ladder records playtime rather than skill

IntermediateSocialMultiplayer

It runs from Rookie Magician up through Expert Wizard and then Master Wizard Level 1 and beyond, and you gain experience even in matches you lose. A high rank across the table tells you how much somebody has played, not how hard they are to beat.

Verified on 1.21

Spells

#Several modes hand you one spell or none at all

IntermediateSocial

Single player Endless is light magic only. In multiplayer, Race Easy and Survival Easy are light only, Puzzle Easy offers nothing but Undo, Puzzle Normal nothing but Ivy, and Puzzle Special has no spells whatsoever. Dark magic appears on Normal and Special.

Tournaments

#A Cup has no fixed round count, it runs to 9 medals

New PlayerSocialMultiplayer

Each round pays 3 for first, 2 for second, 1 for third, and nothing for fourth, and play continues until somebody reaches nine. That makes a consistent second place a genuine winning strategy and a single blown round much less fatal than it feels.

Verified on 1.21

#Medals past 9 still count, so overshoot decides a shared finish

IntermediateSocialMultiplayer

If two players cross the line in the same round, the one arriving on 11 beats the one arriving on 10. Only an exact tie sends the Cup to an extra round, which is why taking first rather than second in the deciding round is worth the risk.

Spells

#Crossing the next line throws away the spell you were saving

New PlayerQuality of Life

You can only hold one at a time, and the new pickup replaces the old one rather than queueing behind it. Hoarding a good spell through a milestone is how you end up with a worse one and nothing to show for the patience.

Verified on 1.21

Endless

#Endless restricts what you cast, not what lands on you

IntermediateHidden MechanicsSolo

Endless Survival throws waves of dark magic every 30 seconds or so, sometimes combined, and Endless Puzzle drops petrified bricks into random positions. Only your own casting is limited to light magic, which catches out anyone treating Endless as a calm mode.

Physics

#The same stack can behave differently from one run to the next

AdvancedHidden Mechanics

WeirdBeard have said the physics is non-deterministic, so a tower can start oscillating and collapse with nothing added to it. Patch 1.21 improved consistency in December 2016 but did not make the simulation repeatable, which means a lost run is not always a mistake.

Puzzle

#The laser never rises as a penalty, the ground rises instead

IntermediateHidden Mechanics

What squeezes you in Puzzle is the floor coming up from below. The laser only moves in the single-player Endless Puzzle Challenge, where clearing a full group of bricks lifts it and begins a new stage, so it is a reward marker rather than a threat.

Race

#Wind exists only in Race on Special, and it never changes direction

IntermediateHidden Mechanics

It blows constantly from one side for the whole match rather than picking up partway through, and it appears in no other mode or difficulty. It only pushes the bricks facing it, so everything behind your leading edge is sheltered by what is already stacked.
