Getting Started with Unrailed 2: Back on Track
Unrailed 2: Back on Track is a cooperative railroad construction roguelite where you chop trees, mine iron, and lay track in front of a moving train before it runs out of rails and derails. Raw resources go into the Storage wagon, which feeds the Crafter automatically, and finished track stacks on the Crafter for you to pick up. You keep the engine topped up with water, spend bolts at stations on wagons and upgrades, and fight a boss to move between biomes.
Unrailed 2: Back on Track is a cooperative railroad construction roguelite developed by Indoor Astronaut and co-published by Indoor Astronaut and Kepler Ghost. One to four players chop trees, mine iron, and lay track in front of a moving train before it runs out of rails and derails. The concept is identical to the original Unrailed! - the scope is not. Boss battles, permanent meta-progression, branching biome paths, a full level editor, and a cartridge ability system transform the sequel from a party game into a genuine roguelite with dozens of hours of structured content.
The game entered Early Access on Steam on November 7, 2024, and launched its 1.0 release on June 11, 2026 for PC (Windows and macOS), PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. It is Steam Deck Verified. Endless mode supports local and online co-op for one to four players, and Time Attack, Sandbox, Versus, and custom maps go up to eight.
:::warning Crossplay is opt-in, and you have to switch it on everywhere Crossplay arrived with the 1.0 update and is off until you enable it. Turn it on in the Online tab of the settings menu on every device in the party, and make sure everyone is on the same game version. It is not on by default, and a single device with it switched off will keep the group apart. :::
Unrailed 2: Back on Track is a standalone sequel to the original Unrailed! released in 2020. While the core loop of chopping, mining, crafting, and laying track is the same, the two games have different biomes, progression systems, boss encounters, and mechanics. This guide covers only Unrailed 2.
How the Game Worksโ
You start each level with a train sitting on a short section of track. The train has an engine and three default wagons: a Crafter, a Storage wagon, and a Tank wagon. After a brief countdown, the train starts moving. If it reaches the end of the track with no rails ahead, it derails and the run ends - unless you have extra lives.
Here is the basic loop:
- Chop trees with your axe to collect wood. Mine rocks with your pickaxe to collect iron.
- Drop the resources into the Storage wagon. The Crafter pulls what it needs out of Storage on its own and turns wood and iron into track.
- Pick the finished track off the Crafter and place it on the ground ahead of the train.
- Keep the engine watered. Fill the bucket at a water source and pour it on the engine before its water runs out and it catches fire.
- Reach the station at the end of the level. Spend bolts on wagon upgrades, new wagons, or extensions.
- Choose your route at the next junction.
- Pay 10 bolts at a Biome Junction Station to fight the biome boss and move to a new biome.
- Repeat until the train derails or you reach UnRailD HQ and the credits.
:::warning Resources go into Storage, not the Crafter This is the single most common thing to get wrong. You carry wood and iron to the Storage wagon. The Crafter ships with a Storage-Pull extension already fitted and draws its own materials out of Storage, and the track it makes stacks on the Crafter itself. Storage is the input to the chain, not an overflow bin for it. If you throw a resource while facing nothing in particular, the game aims it at Storage for exactly this reason. :::
The train never stops, and its speed is governed by several interacting factors. The baseline speed increases incrementally per station level. The speed multiplier resets when entering a new biome, though the starting speed of subsequent biomes increases if you loop through "plus-biomes" (biomes visited more than once via branching paths). The engine detects active input counts, including bots, and accelerates for larger lobbies. Finally, the engine reads the track queue ahead of the locomotive: the train throttles down heavily when fewer than two tracks are placed ahead, and it accelerates aggressively when eight or more tracks are queued. You are always racing against it.
Controls and Toolsโ
Every player starts with access to two tools: an axe and a pickaxe. You can carry one thing at a time, and swapping efficiently is core to the gameplay.
Basic Controlsโ
The game ships a key-remapping file, and the actions it exposes are the clearest picture of the control scheme. Note that pick up, place, and drop are one single input, not three.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Move | Walk. |
| Pick / place | One button for picking up, putting down, and placing track. Also pours water on a wagon when you face it. |
| Dash | A short burst of speed. Also activates the Brake wagon and spins the Slot Machine wagon. |
| Emoji wheel | Opens the emoji wheel. 111 emoji, and you can remap which ones appear. |
| Ping tool | A separate input from the emoji wheel. Marks a spot for your team. |
| Switch bot | Swaps control with the AI bot. |
| Controls | Opens the in-game controls drawer. On controller this is left stick press. |
:::note Chopping and mining need no button at all Face a tree while holding the axe and you chop it. Face a rock while holding the pickaxe and you mine it. There is nothing to press. Pouring water did change from the first game, though: you now press the pick button while facing a wagon to water it. :::
The Toolsโ
| Tool | Function |
|---|---|
| Axe | Chops trees into wood. Required for clearing forested paths. |
| Pickaxe | Mines rocks into iron. Required for clearing rocky terrain. |
| Bucket | Carries water. Pour it on the engine to refill its water, extinguish burning wagons, and collect milk from animals. |
All three count as tools for the task that asks you not to hold one for twenty seconds. Dynamite does not.
You cannot carry a tool and a resource at the same time. To chop a tree you need the axe in hand. To carry that wood to Storage you have to set the axe down first. Efficient tool swapping is what separates functioning teams from trainwrecks. The Stacking cartridge raises how much you can carry, and that is why the Crocodile is worth finding.
Resources and Craftingโ
The Crafter wagon is the heart of your operation. It takes raw materials and turns them into track pieces.
Resource Chainโ
| Step | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Gather | Chop a tree (yields 1 wood) or mine a rock (yields 1 iron). |
| 2. Deliver | Carry the resource to the Storage wagon and drop it in. |
| 3. Pull | The Crafter draws wood and iron out of Storage by itself, using the Storage-Pull extension it starts with. |
| 4. Craft | The Crafter turns them into track, which stacks on the Crafter. |
| 5. Place | Take the track off the Crafter and place it on the ground in front of the train. |
- The Crafter needs both wood and iron. Ten wood and no iron produces nothing.
- Track pieces are straight by default. They automatically curve when placed adjacent to an existing track at an angle.
- You can hand-feed the Crafter directly, but that is the exception. Storage is where resources are meant to go, and the game will warn you if you try to leave a shop without both a Storage wagon and a Crafter that can pull from it.
- The Crafter's output stack grows as you upgrade it, from three tracks at level 1 to thirteen at level 6.
Resource Compressionโ
Unrailed 2 introduces a compression system that did not exist in the original game. You can combine 5 pieces of wood or 5 pieces of iron into 1 compressed unit using the Compactor wagon. Compressed resources take up a single slot but count as five units of material when placed in a wagon, effectively quintupling your Storage capacity.
Bridge Constructionโ
Water crossings and gaps require bridges. Bridges are built with wood - place wood on water tiles to create traversable surfaces. Since the Action Cartridge Update, compressed wood can also be used for bridges, and placing a compressed wood unit automatically bridges neighboring tiles if space permits. In later biomes like Island Interchange, water management becomes a core challenge with tidal mechanics that expose or submerge terrain.
Train Maintenanceโ
The engine carries water, and heat burns through it. What you are managing is a water reserve measured in seconds of exposure to a heat source, not a percentage bar. The Hydro Coaler starts with 60 seconds of water, the Pusher and Spectral Express with 40, and most wagons carry 30 of their own. When a wagon's water runs out, it catches fire.
How to prevent fires:
- Find a water source (lake, river, or puddle) near the track.
- Pick up the bucket.
- Walk to the water source and fill the bucket.
- Walk back to the engine and press the pick button while facing it to pour.
- Repeat before the water runs low again.
A bucket refills the reserve instantly, and it also puts out a wagon that is already burning. Water capacity replenishes on its own once the fire is out.
In the early biomes, watering duty is light and one player can handle it alongside other tasks. Boiler Badlands is the hard case, and the reason is not that the engine heats faster: there is no water in the biome at all. The only way to fill a bucket there is at a Water Shrine.
:::warning Fire spreads, but a burning train is not a lost train Fire does spread from wagon to wagon, so put it out quickly. It is not a run-ender though. A bucket of water extinguishes a burning wagon, and its water capacity refills once the fire is out. The achievement for having every wagon burning at once sits at 9.5 percent, which is not the profile of an unrecoverable disaster. :::
The Cartridge Systemโ
Cartridges are a new ability system unique to Unrailed 2. They are character ability modifiers - passive or active buffs that enhance your capabilities during a run.
How Cartridges Workโ
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Discovery | Find cartridges at stations, in chests, or from milking biome-specific animals. |
| Equipping | Equip cartridges at stations. You can stack multiple passive cartridges simultaneously. |
| Permanent unlock | Obtaining a cartridge once during a run permanently unlocks it for purchase at the Cartridge Hub in the lobby. You do not have to use it. |
| Starting slots | Four in total: one Action Cartridge slot plus three passive slots. A July 2025 patch tied unlocking them to defeating bosses in Endless, while the wiki still lists Hexnut prices for each (30 for the Action slot, then 25, 50 and 150). Expect to need both progress and currency. You cannot change your starter cartridge once a run begins. |
| Action Cartridges | A special class that must be triggered by a button press. More powerful than passive cartridges, but you can only carry one Action Cartridge at a time. The Riding Cartridge was converted to an Action Cartridge in the February 2025 update. |
Notable Cartridgesโ
| Cartridge | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Brute Force | Increased tool power - mine and chop faster. | Deer (Monorail Meadows) |
| Stacking | Increased carrying capacity. | Crocodile (Cargo Canyon) |
| Torch | Illumination and fire damage to obstacles like webs. | Frog (Boxcar Bayou) |
| Multitool | Versatile tool that works on both trees and rocks. | Crab (Island Interchange) |
| Bucket | Enhanced cooling efficiency. | Waste Slime (Boiler Badlands) |
| Extra Life | Grants a player an extra death before it costs the run (max 4 stacks). | Slot Machine, extreme-map Cartridge Vaults, and Slowdown Snail milk |
| Lucky Punch | Increases Slot Machine odds by eliminating mismatched dice rolls. | Found at stations |
| Insta-Wallop | 10 percent chance to destroy an enemy on the first hit. This is an anti-creature cartridge, not a mining one. | Found at stations |
| Claw | An Action Cartridge. Grabs tools or items from a distance. Added in the August 2025 update. | Found at stations |
| Nether | Raises the chance of hard and extreme maps. The real key to the Tryhard achievement, and to farming bolts. | Found at stations |
:::warning Milk cartridges are a short buff, not a stack you keep This trips up almost everyone. Milking an animal does not add cartridges to your inventory. It grants temporary copies that expire after about 12 seconds when you drink straight from the animal, or 15 to 25 seconds from a Milk Wagon depending on its level. You can watch them gray out on your player card. "5x Brute Force" means five stacks live at once for those few seconds, which is exactly the number Brute Force needs to hit its 100 percent breakpoint. It is a burst you time, not a supply you bank, and it only buffs the player who drinks it. :::
Permanent Meta-Progressionโ
Unlike the original Unrailed!, Unrailed 2 features a persistent progression system that rewards you even after a failed run.
What Carries Between Runsโ
| Unlock Type | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Cartridge library | Every cartridge you use for the first time is permanently unlocked for purchase. |
| Cartridge slots | Up to 3 starting cartridge slots unlock automatically as you defeat biome bosses. |
| Engine choices | Unlock new starting engines with different stats. The Toy Engine grants infinite lives and costs nothing, unlocking automatically once the Engine Foundry opens. The Pusher and Spectral Express are the ones you pay Hexnuts for. |
| Biome progress | Once you reach a biome, you can start future runs from that biome instead of beginning at the start. |
| Cosmetics | Characters, hats, glasses, backpacks and balloons. Skelly and Mortimer arrived with 1.0. Not all of them are bought: the Witch and Frank come from mining a pumpkin, the Santa and Gingerbread skins only unlock from Snowfigures during the winter season, and the Among Us crewmate unlocks by leading a teammate to their demise. |
| Handbook | Tracks what you have encountered. Completing it earns Well Informed, one of the rarest achievements in the game at 0.4 percent. It records wagons, stations and extensions among other things, and explicitly excludes achievements. |
:::tip The Toy Engine is free, and it is the right way to learn It unlocks automatically once the Engine Foundry appears, which happens after you connect your first signpost. There is no price to save up for. On a crash it restarts you at the last station, and you can reload that checkpoint as many times as you like.
Two real caveats. It blocks exactly one achievement, Get a Life, and only because that achievement means winning a train life from a Slot Machine Station and the Toy Engine cannot receive one. And in Time Attack it does crash when the timer runs past zero, so it is not unconditionally safe. Its leaderboard is a separate category, not a lesser one: it is fully ranked, awards the same crowns, and has its own all-time record. :::
Game Modesโ
Unrailed 2 offers several distinct ways to play:
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| Endless | The core roguelite experience. Progress through biomes, defeat bosses, upgrade your train, and survive as long as possible. Branching paths let you choose your route between biomes. |
| Classic | 1 to 4 players. A deliberate recreation of the original Unrailed!, using the new biomes. It removes cartridges and wagon extensions and has no bosses, but it still unlocks biomes and has its own speedrun leaderboard. You need 6 keys, one per biome, to reach the credits, and each key you collect is worth an extra bolt. Its biome order is fixed and differs from Endless. |
| Versus | 2 to 8 players, up to 4 a side. The goal is to make the opposing team derail first. Reaching the station ahead of them is not a win, it just gives them a temporary catch-up speed boost. Bombs and item-stealing drones come from the Versus Constructor wagon. |
| Time Attack | 1 to 8 players. You get 20 minutes to travel as far as you can, and the run does not stop there. The clock goes negative, the train accelerates hard, and it ends when you crash. The train never stops at stations in this mode. Weekly challenges put everyone on the same seed. Unlocks after your first boss. |
| Sandbox | Up to eight players. Configure the train, the stations, mining speed, lives, or turn crashing off entirely. Ideal for practice, and most achievements are disabled. Unlocks after you defeat three bosses, so it is not available to a new player. |
| Terrain Conductor | The level editor. Build maps and share them. Playing other people's maps is the separate Custom Map mode, 1 to 8 players, and finishing one earns A Conductor's Customs. |
If you are brand new, start in Endless mode on the Toy Engine to learn the mechanics without losing whole runs. Classic is also a good entry point if you prefer the arcade feel without bosses. Sandbox is the natural place to drill a biome that keeps killing you, but note you have to beat three bosses before it unlocks, so it is a mid-game tool and not a beginner one.
Boss Battlesโ
Each biome in Endless mode culminates in a unique boss encounter - a major addition over the original Unrailed!. Bosses introduce mechanics that force your team to adapt mid-run.
| Boss | Biome | Key Mechanic |
|---|---|---|
| Mole Chief | Monorail Meadows | Throws dynamite at the track. Collect the thrown dynamite to clear resources - turns the boss into a resource advantage. |
| Sandworm Supervisor | Cargo Canyon | The safe path is fixed when the level generates. Unsafe ground rumbles when you stand on it and summons the worm after about ten seconds. Scout on foot and back off the moment the ground shakes. Water ponds are always connected to the safe route. |
| Spider Queen | Boxcar Bayou | Cocoons everyone who is moving. Watch for the red exclamation mark above the boss, then stand still. Holding a tool also prevents the cocoon. If caught, wiggle free. |
| Octoboss | Island Interchange | Controls water and terrain. Requires careful bridge management and resource allocation. |
| Torpeboss | Boiler Badlands | Throws lava to block paths and fires both straight and homing torpedoes. Water shrines double as portable cover. Building far ahead makes its attack pattern more lava-heavy, so stay compact. |
| Mothermimic | Loco Labyrinth | Spawns on a chunk swap. Summons weaker Mimictrees and throws grabbable bombs that explode. Clear Mimictrees and use the bombs against it. |
| Head of the United Railway Division | Underground Unit | Known in game as Dijkstra. Two phases. It patrols the top of the map firing a killing red laser and homing torpedoes. The red beam is blocked by your own train, which makes the train a shelter. You clear the way by carrying puzzle boxes onto red buttons. |
:::warning The boss fights are not the difficulty spike they look like Boss levels run at a much lower train speed than ordinary levels, so the pressure is on execution instead of pace. The Mole Chief in particular is a net gain: the dynamite it throws at you is free path-clearing, and it upgrades to level 2 dynamite if you meet him on a second visit. :::
Environmental Threats by Biomeโ
Each biome introduces hostile creatures and environmental hazards that actively sabotage your operation.
| Biome | Key Hazard | How to Handle It |
|---|---|---|
| Monorail Meadows | Mole hills that block paths | Pour water on them (more efficient than tools). |
| Cargo Canyon | Sandworms chase dashing players | Stop moving to make Sandworms stop. Avoid dashing near critical infrastructure. |
| Boxcar Bayou | Spiders cocoon anyone who moves, and mushrooms explode | Stand still when a spider faces you. Burn webs with Torch, and never strike a mushroom you are standing beside. |
| Island Interchange | Clouds shove your stockpiles into the water | Clouds hunt the tallest stack of items on the ground and push it in. Do not leave tall piles near water. Collect iron at low tide, since at high tide it cannot be mined or bridged over. |
| Boiler Badlands | Lava terrain, extreme overheating | Push water shrines into lava to create paths. Keep at least one shrine accessible for cooling. |
| Loco Labyrinth | Chunk swaps rearrange the map | Stand on chunks or build track on them to prevent swaps. Watch for Mimictrees disguised as resources. |
| Underground Unit | Continuous lasers, and robots that steal tools | Blue lasers do not pulse. They stream from Laser Turrets that you destroy with a tool. G.R.A.B.I.E. steals tools and can carry one off-screen for good, so dash into it to make it drop. The red button lookalike is a B.U.T.T.O.N. that chases and self-detonates. |
Biome Animals and the Milk Wagonโ
Each biome has a native animal that can be attached to the Milk Wagon for unique cartridge rewards:
| Biome | Animal | Milk Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Monorail Meadows | Deer | 5x Brute Force (faster chopping and mining) |
| Cargo Canyon | Crocodile | 6x Stacking (carry more at once) |
| Boxcar Bayou | Frog | 5x Torch (light, and it burns webs) |
| Island Interchange | Crab | 5x Multitool (works on both trees and rocks). Carrying a Crab also turns water to sand and reveals iron under the surface. |
| Boiler Badlands | Waste Slime | 5x Bucket |
| Loco Labyrinth | Slowdown Snail | 2x Extra Life |
| Underground Unit | G.R.A.B.I.E. | 5x Auto Stacker |
All seven are rideable as well as milkable, and riding needs the Saddle action cartridge. While mounted you get that animal's milk buff for free.
:::tip What the Milk Wagon is actually for Not a one-off payout. It stores six units of milk, extracts on a timer, combines the effects of every animal attached to it, and keeps those effects running as long as milk remains, even if the animals come loose. It is an uptime engine. The Snail is the sleeper pick, since Extra Life is otherwise one of the hardest cartridges to come by. :::
Your First Runโ
- Take the Toy Engine. It costs nothing and unlocks as soon as the Engine Foundry opens. It restarts you at the last station instead of ending the run, and that is how you learn later biomes without paying two hours for each mistake.
- Divide tasks immediately. At minimum, one player gathers and fills Storage while the other lays track and waters the engine. With four players, assign specific roles (see the Co-op and Strategy Guide).
- Clear a wide path. Do not just chop the trees directly in front of the train. Clear a corridor two to three tiles wide so you have room to maneuver and lay track without getting blocked.
- Keep tracks straight. Straight tracks use fewer pieces than winding paths. Only curve when you must dodge an obstacle you cannot clear in time.
- Watch the engine. Designate someone to check the overheat bar every few seconds. A fire in the first biome is embarrassing and avoidable.
- Milk animals when you are about to need the buff, not before. The Deer in Monorail Meadows gives five stacks of Brute Force, but only for about twelve seconds, and only to whoever drinks it.
- Do not panic at the boss. The Mole Chief in Monorail Meadows is designed to be learnable. His dynamite can actually help you - collect the thrown dynamite to clear resources faster.
- Use your bolts wisely. Upgrade the Crafter first, then Storage, then consider a Dynamite wagon. Depth over breadth wins early, and wagons go all the way to level 6 at the Blacksmith, so there is a lot more headroom than a first run suggests.
- Do not rush the countdown. The train sits still for a while at the start of each level, but laying more than ten tracks during that window shortens it by roughly a second per extra track. Building fast at the start costs you your own prep time.
- Expect to derail. Every crash teaches you something about resource timing, path planning, or boss mechanics, and that knowledge carries forward through permanent progression.
:::info How train speed really works The speedometer is set at stations and does not change mid-level. It rises with each station you connect, scales with the number of players, takes an offset from the biome you are in, and climbs further for each biome you revisit. Moving to a new biome reduces it, and the game marks that on the junction node.
The speed you actually travel at is separate, and it tracks how much rail sits ahead of the train. Keep that queue short and the train slows down. The exact thresholds are not documented anywhere reliable, so treat "lay a couple ahead and no more" as the shape of the rule and not a number. Looping the track back on itself is the recognized way to buy time. :::
The Lives Systemโ
There are two separate systems here and they are easy to confuse.
Train lives. You start a run with none. The game ends when the engine crashes. A Slot Machine Station can award a single train life, and you cannot hold more than one at a time. If you have one, a crash restarts you at the previous station instead of ending the run, and the map generates the same way, so you can plan the retry.
Extra Life cartridges. These are per-player and cover a player death instead of a derailment. They stack up to four, reduced from ten in the February 2025 patch. Sources are the Slot Machine, the Cartridge Vault at the end of an extreme map, and Slowdown Snail milk.
- After dying, players respawn with a single heart until they reach the next station, where hearts are replenished.
- Lucky Punch slightly improves your odds at slot machines. It nudges the probability, it does not remove losing rolls.
- The Toy Engine sidesteps train lives entirely, restarting you at the last station on any crash.
Four is a hard cap on Extra Life stacks. Anything beyond that is wasted.
Tasks (TODOs)โ
The Task system operates as a secondary objective framework during runs. Tasks appear in the UI as "TODOs" and offer bolt rewards upon completion.
How tasks work:
- Tasks assign specific objectives during a level (e.g., "Kill no animals," "Hold tools for less than 0:20 at a time").
- Completing tasks earns bonus bolts and feeds the Bounty Hunter achievement (10 in a row without failing).
- The base task pays 1 bolt and the purchased extra task pays 2.
:::warning Two task traps that are easy to trigger by accident "Kill no animals" fails in ways that do not feel like killing. A spider that attacks you dies in the act of cocooning you, and that counts. So does destroying the Sandworm's nest, which you can do accidentally with a single bucket of water.
The tool task is "don't hold any tool for 20 seconds", and it counts three tools: axe, pickaxe and bucket. The bucket is the one that catches people out. Dynamite is not a tool and does not count. :::
You can also buy an extra task for one bolt at the signpost in any station except a Biome Junction, and that is how most players pick up So Many TODOs. If the station has the Sale modifier, that extra task is effectively free.
The Handbook and Cassettesโ
The in-game Handbook is the primary tracking mechanism for absolute game completion. The Well Informed achievement requires filling it, which covers wagons, stations and extensions among other things. Achievements themselves are excluded. At 0.4 percent it is the second-rarest achievement in the game.
Soundtrack Cassettesโ
Soundtrack Cassettes are scattered across the game, and there are far more than a handful. The achievement text gives no number, but the distribution works out to at least 25:
| Where | How many |
|---|---|
| Main menu, just below the Cartridge Hub | 1 |
| Train-ing Facility tutorial, on the second and third levels, at the top behind a tall rock | 2 |
| Classic mode, spawning at random | 1 |
| Every biome | 3 each. Two replace ordinary bolt spawns at random, and the last is always on the boss level. |
Two per biome occupy bolt slots, so a level that looks like it is missing a bolt is often hiding a cassette instead. Collecting them all unlocks Felix & Mathilde's Biggest Fan, which sits at 0.7 percent. The soundtrack itself runs to 51 tracks.
Frequently Asked Questionsโ
How do you make tracks in Unrailed 2?
Chop a tree with your axe for wood and mine a rock with your pickaxe for iron, then drop both into the Storage wagon. The Crafter pulls materials out of Storage by itself and turns them into track, which stacks on the Crafter for you to pick up and place. Storage is the input to the chain, not an overflow bin, and the Crafter needs both resources, so ten wood and no iron produces nothing.
Why does my train keep catching fire?
The engine holds a reserve of water measured in seconds of heat exposure, and it ignites when that runs out. Fill the bucket at a lake, river or puddle and press the pick button while facing the engine to top it up. Fire does spread wagon to wagon, but it is recoverable: a bucket of water puts a burning wagon out and its capacity refills afterwards.
Should I use the Toy Engine?
Yes, while you are learning. It is free and unlocks automatically once the Engine Foundry opens, and it restarts you at the last station on a crash instead of ending the run. It blocks one achievement, Get a Life, because that one requires winning a train life from a Slot Machine Station and the Toy Engine cannot receive one. It also crashes for real in Time Attack once the clock passes zero. Its leaderboard is a separate category, not a lesser one.
How many players can play Unrailed 2?
Endless and Classic are one to four players. Time Attack, Sandbox, custom maps and Versus all go up to eight, with Versus running up to four a side. Crossplay covers PC, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, but it arrived with the 1.0 update and is off until you enable it in the Online settings tab on every device in the party.
What should I spend my first bolts on?
Upgrade the Crafter first, then Storage, then consider a Dynamite wagon. The Crafter is the genuine bottleneck early on, when you will have plenty of resources sitting in Storage and be waiting on track. Depth beats breadth, and since wagons upgrade to level 6 there is far more room to invest in one wagon than a first run suggests.
