Wagons and Upgrades
Every train in Unrailed 2: Back on Track starts with two wagons, the Crafter and the Storage wagon. Everything else is bought. Wagons upgrade to level 6 at a Blacksmith and carry three extension slots each, so putting bolts into one strong wagon beats spreading them across many. Your engine sets your wagon capacity, water reserve and starting speed, and that capacity grows by one for every biome you complete.
Your train is the single most important thing in Unrailed 2: Back on Track. Every wagon you add, every extension you attach, and every upgrade you purchase determines whether you survive the next biome or derail at the first boss. This guide covers every wagon type, the extension modifier system, the bolt economy, engine progression, and the upgrade strategies that separate first-biome crashers from credits runners.
:::info How upgrading actually works Every wagon starts at level 1 and upgrades to level 6 at a Blacksmith Station. You can read a wagon's level off the color of its base: gray, green, blue, purple, yellow, red. The full ladder costs 3, 4, 6, 12 and 24 bolts, so 49 bolts to max one wagon, or 42 with a Sale modifier.
On top of that, every wagon has three extension slots. Extensions are not a way around the level cap, they stack with it: Supercharge adds a level, Hydrocharge adds two at the cost of needing water, and the Pusher Engine adds two to its neighbors. That is how wagons end up performing above level 6.
The Supercharger was not retired. Unrailed 2 has a Supercharger wagon, a Supercharge extension, and a Pusher engine, all doing versions of the same job. The Brake Track Wagon is genuinely new to the sequel. :::
Starter Wagonsโ
Every train starts with two wagons: the Crafter and the Storage wagon. The Tank is not one of them, and neither is anything else. Upgrading these two is almost always your first priority.
You can also get rid of wagons. Leaving one behind in a station is common enough that there is an achievement for it, and a Blacksmith will recycle a wagon to reclaim its extensions.
Crafter Wagonโ
The Crafter turns wood and iron into track. It ships with a Storage-Pull extension already fitted, and that is how it feeds itself out of the Storage wagon without anyone carrying anything to it. Finished track stacks on the Crafter, and that is where your track layer collects it.
| Level | Craft speed | Output stack |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3.5s | 3 |
| 2 | 2.9s | 5 |
| 3 | 2.3s | 7 |
| 4 | 1.7s | 9 |
| 5 | 1.1s | 11 |
| 6 | 0.5s | 13 |
Priority: first, and it is not close. Early on you will have resources piling up in Storage and be standing around waiting for track. That is the Crafter being the bottleneck, and it is the signal to go looking for a Blacksmith.
Leave the pre-installed Storage-Pull alone. You can strip it at a Blacksmith, but the wagon stops feeding itself if you do. For the other two slots, two Hydrocharge extensions are the strong play: a Hydrocharged Crafter only heats while it is actually crafting, and at high levels it crafts so fast that it barely touches its water at all.
Storage Wagonโ
The Storage wagon is where wood and iron go. Its handbook line is "stores wood and iron for other wagons", and that is exactly its job: it is the input buffer the Crafter and every other consuming wagon draws from. Finished track does not overflow into it.
| Level | Stack size |
|---|---|
| 1 | 3 |
| 2 | 5 |
| 3 | 7 |
| 4 | 9 |
| 5 | 11 |
| 6 | 13 |
Stack size keeps climbing past level 6 through Supercharge and Stack-Boost extensions, up to a hard ceiling of 21.
Priority: straight after the Crafter. A bigger buffer is what lets the Crafter keep working while your gatherers are off across the map.
A Magnet-Pick extension on the Storage wagon makes it hoover up resources lying near the track, which effectively turns the ground into extra storage. It is also what makes the Mag-Tractor wagon work.
Purchasable Wagonsโ
At each station you can spend bolts to add new wagons. Your train has a capacity set by your engine, and that capacity grows by one for every biome you complete, up to thirteen.
Tank Wagonโ
The Tank is a purchase, not a starter. It stores water for the whole train.
| Level | Water capacity |
|---|---|
| 1 | 30s |
| 2 | 40s |
| 3 | 50s |
| 4 | 60s |
| 5 | 70s |
| 6 | 80s |
:::warning The Tank has no cooling range, and its position does not matter The combined capacity of all your Tank wagons forms a single global water pool for the train, and any heat source draws from that pool wherever it is. There is no proximity effect to optimize. The Tank cannot even take a Range-Extension, because it has no range to extend. :::
Priority: worth it before Boiler Badlands, where the biome has no water of its own and every refill has to come from a Water Shrine.
Dynamite Wagonโ
Passively produces dynamite sticks over time. Dynamite clears a large area of trees, rocks, and terrain obstacles when thrown.
| Level | Craft speed | Blast radius | Fuse |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 40s | 2m | 3.0s |
| 2 | 40s | 3m | 2.7s |
| 3 | 40s | 4m | 2.4s |
| 4 | 40s | 5m | 2.1s |
| 5 | 40s | 6m | 1.8s |
| 6 | 40s | 7m | 1.5s |
Note what does not improve: craft speed is flat at 40 seconds all the way to level 6. Leveling buys you a bigger blast and a shorter fuse, not more sticks.
The Dynamite wagon is widely considered the single best purchasable wagon, and at level 6 a 7 meter radius clears roughly 49 tiles in one throw. Production is stuck at one stick per 40 seconds until level 6, so a second Dynamite wagon is the only way to raise throughput early, and running two in later biomes is a real strategy and not a luxury.
A level 6 dynamite is also what the Master of Destruction achievement wants, and a maxed wagon gets you there on its own. Avoid Hydrocharge on this one, since the wagon would catch fire roughly every one and a bit sticks.
Ghost Wagonโ
Allows players and entities to pass through the wagon itself. Normally, your growing train becomes a physical barrier that forces players to walk around it. The Ghost wagon eliminates this problem.
| Level | Neighboring wagons ghosted |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 |
| 2 | 1 |
| 3 | 2 |
| 4 | 3 |
| 5 | 4 |
| 6 | 5 |
Why it matters: as your train grows, walking around it to reach the other side wastes seconds you do not have. A Ghost wagon lets players pass straight through. Note the direction of the benefit: it is about players getting past the train, not about the train getting anywhere.
:::info Boo! is easier than it looks The achievement asks you to ghost every wagon without the Spectral Express, and at 21.6 percent it is not a rare feat. The simple route is to level a Ghost wagon until its range covers the train, optionally with a Supercharge. The Ghost wagon accepts only Supercharge and Key extensions, so there is no "range extension" route to build. The alternative is fitting a separate Ghost extension to each wagon individually. :::
Brake Track Wagonโ
Unrailed 2 has two braking wagons and they work nothing alike. This is the one that makes special track.
| Level | Tracks in | Craft speed | Output stack |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | 30.0s | 3 |
| 2 | 3 | 26.4s | 4 |
| 3 | 3 | 22.8s | 5 |
| 4 | 3 | 19.2s | 6 |
| 5 | 3 | 15.6s | 7 |
| 6 | 3 | 12.0s | 8 |
How it works: feed it three ordinary tracks and it returns one brake track, which you lay on the line like any other. The input cost is three at every level. What upgrading buys is speed and a bigger output stack.
:::warning A brake track does not cut speed to a quarter Its effect scales inversely with how fast you are already going, and it lasts only about three seconds after the first wagon rolls over it. At 0.4 m/s it takes off roughly half your speed. At 1.0 m/s it takes off about 30 percent. At very low speeds it does essentially nothing, which means brake tracks are worse than ordinary track below about 1.0 m/s. Save them for when the train is genuinely fast. :::
Brake Wagonโ
The other one, and the one you actually want when something has gone wrong. Dash into it twice to fire it, and the train slows by 75 percent for a few seconds.
| Level | Active | Recharge |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.0s | 300s |
| 2 | 8.2s | 264s |
| 3 | 9.4s | 228s |
| 4 | 10.6s | 192s |
| 5 | 11.8s | 156s |
| 6 | 13.0s | 120s |
One activation per charge, and the reduction is capped so it never takes more than 1 m/s off. The long recharge is the real constraint.
Collector Wagonโ
Automatically gathers nearby resources from the ground and deposits them directly into your train's Storage.
| Level | Radius | Collect interval | Input / output stack |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5m | 1.0s | 1 / 5 |
| 2 | 6m | 0.9s | 2 / 6 |
| 3 | 7m | 0.9s | 3 / 7 |
| 4 | 8m | 0.8s | 4 / 8 |
| 5 | 9m | 0.8s | 5 / 9 |
| 6 | 10m | 0.7s | 6 / 10 |
How it works: load it with wood to fuel it, and it pulls loose resources within its radius onto itself. Active duration is a flat 15 seconds per wood at every level, so a maxed Collector still burns fuel just as fast as a new one.
:::note It does not reach Storage on its own Out of the box the Collector piles resources into its own output stack and someone still has to move them. Fit a Storage-Push extension to make it feed the Storage wagon automatically. That is the step that turns it into real automation. :::
The Collector pairs powerfully with Dynamite. Blast a cluster of resources with dynamite, and the Collector automatically gathers the drops - no manual pickup required. This combination is the fastest resource pipeline in the game.
Milk Wagonโ
The Milk Wagon generates consumable cartridge buffs from biome-specific animals. Lure an animal near the Milk Wagon, and it physically attaches. Each animal type provides a set of free cartridges when milked.
| Animal | Biome | Milk grants |
|---|---|---|
| Deer | Monorail Meadows | 5x Brute Force |
| Crocodile | Cargo Canyon | 6x Stacking |
| Frog | Boxcar Bayou | 5x Torch |
| Crab | Island Interchange | 5x Multitool |
| Waste Slime | Boiler Badlands | 5x Bucket |
| Slowdown Snail | Loco Labyrinth | 2x Extra Life |
| G.R.A.B.I.E. | Underground Unit | 5x Auto Stacker |
| Level | Max animals | Rope radius | Milking speed | Buff duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | 4m | 10s | 15s |
| 2 | 4 | 4m | 9s | 16s |
| 3 | 5 | 5m | 8s | 17s |
| 4 | 7 | 6m | 7s | 18s |
| 5 | 8 | 7m | 6s | 19s |
| 6 | 9 | 7m | 5s | 20s |
Why it matters, and what it is not. The cartridges milk grants are temporary: about 12 seconds drinking straight from an animal, or 15 to 25 seconds from the wagon depending on its level. You are not stockpiling anything. What makes the wagon good is uptime, not payout. It holds six units of milk, extracts on a timer, combines the effects of every animal roped to it, and keeps those effects running as long as milk remains, even if the animals come off.
Animals are roped to the wagon instead of mounted, and that is what the rope radius stat is about.
Since the Action Cartridge Update, roped animals cannot be hit with the axe or pickaxe and cannot be squashed, so accidental deaths are largely solved. The wagon that actually protects animals in transit is the Carriage Wagon, which carries them and stops them dying or coming loose. The Ghost wagon has nothing to do with animal survival.
Piggybank Wagonโ
A resource-to-bolt converter, and one you only get one shot at: it is a special wagon sold at the ??? Station in Monorail Meadows, not something you can pick up later.
| Level | Commodities per bolt |
|---|---|
| 1 | 30 |
| 2 | 26 |
| 3 | 22 |
| 4 | 18 |
| 5 | 14 |
| 6 | 10 |
| 7 | 9 |
| 9 | 8 |
How it works: feed spare wood or iron in and it pays out bolts. The It's Paying Dividends! achievement wants 10 bolts out of it.
:::warning There is a cap on how much you can feed it 30 inserts per station, at every level. That is what makes upgrading worthwhile: the budget stays the same, so a better rate is straight profit. It also means "dump all your overflow into it" is not a plan.
Do not fit Storage-Pull to this wagon or it will drain your buffer. Use Magnet-Pick instead. The recognized build is level 4 plus three Supercharge extensions. :::
Additional Wagonsโ
| Wagon | Function | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Slot Machine | Dash into it to spin. Two matching symbols pay out wood or iron, tracks, or dynamite at the wagon's level. A losing spin sets off a small explosion that heats the wagon. | Spinning is free, so there is nothing to risk. On a winning streak the payouts upgrade to compressed resources and brake tracks. Its quiet superpower is that it generates items out of nothing, which keeps a run alive on a map with no resources left. |
| Transformer | Converts wood to iron and iron to wood. That is all it does. | It handles compressed commodities fine. The bug that made it ignore them was fixed in February 2025. |
| Cannon | Place a target flag anywhere on your own map, then load the wagon and it fires whatever you feed it to that spot. It will fire resources, tools, even animals. | A regular wagon, available at Blacksmith and Crate stations, not a Versus weapon. Its best use is automatic track laying: mark out where you want rail, load it, and it fills the route in one piece at a time. |
| Compactor | Compresses 5 resources into 1 compressed unit. | Each compressed unit counts as five when placed in a wagon. Compressed wood works for bridges and automatically bridges neighboring tiles where it can. |
Wagons this guide used to missโ
The roster runs to 28 wagons. These are the ones worth knowing about before your next run.
| Wagon | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bridge Wagon | One wood becomes a torpedo that flies ahead and platforms every water or lava tile it crosses, mining rock underwater on the way. 6 bridges at level 1, 21 at level 6. This is the real answer to water-heavy biomes, and it makes stockpiling wood for manual bridging mostly unnecessary. |
| Miner Wagon | Feed it iron and it throws out a wave that auto-mines everything to the sides, out to 8 meters at level 6. Dash it to switch between sideways and forwards. |
| Mag-Tractor | Yanks every nearby item of one chosen type into a traveling pile. Pairs with Magnet-Pick on Storage. Collector builds suit players staying under 0.5 m/s, and Mag-Tractor builds are for going past 1.0 m/s. |
| Carriage Wagon | Mobile storage that carries anything a player can, including animals, and keeps them alive and attached in transit. |
| Supercharger Wagon | Burns iron to raise the level of neighboring wagons for 20 seconds. Range grows with level. |
| Torpedo Wagon | One iron becomes a torpedo that destroys everything in a line and punches through Cargo Canyon walls. Deals 30 damage to any creature or boss regardless of level. |
| Turret Tower | Produces a carryable turret you place on the ground. It shoots resources, underwater rock, webs and bones on its own. Excellent against the Octoboss. |
| Conveyor-Belt-Transporter | Deploys masts that link into a two-way conveyor, up to 13 meters apart at level 6. Carries everything except animals. |
| Printer Wagon | ??? Station, Boxcar Bayou. Feed it tracks and it prints a random wagon with an extra extension slot. |
| Cartridge Toaster | ??? Station, Cargo Canyon. Feed it animals, get a random cartridge at the next station. |
| Hexnut Tree | ??? Station, Island Interchange. Produces Hexnuts from nothing on a timer. The way to farm Hexnut Hoarder. |
| Mimic Wagon | ??? Station, Loco Labyrinth. Copies the wagon in front of it, and accepts every extension. |
| Teleporter Wagon | ??? Station, Boiler Badlands. Place a pad and walk between it and the wagon instantly. The only special wagon you can get in Versus. |
| Versus Constructor | Versus only. Iron makes a bomb to throw at the other team, wood makes a drone that steals their items. This is what earns This Is Mine Now. |
Extensions and Modifiersโ
Extensions are add-on modifiers that enhance wagon performance beyond their base upgrade levels. They replace the Supercharger stacking meta from the original Unrailed! with a more diverse modifier system.
How Extensions Workโ
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Where they come from | Shop, Crate and Blacksmith stations. |
| Slots | Three per wagon. Once an extension is in, it stays until you remove it at a Blacksmith. There is no swapping in place. |
| Compatibility | Not every extension fits every wagon, and several combinations the obvious strategy suggests are simply blocked. Check before you plan around one. |
| Blacksmith options | Three of them: Purge strips the extensions and keeps the wagon, Recycle destroys the wagon and keeps the extensions, and Upgrade raises its level. The Recycling achievement wants the second one. |
The extensionsโ
| Extension | Effect |
|---|---|
| Storage-Pull | Pulls items from the nearest Storage wagon into this one. Prioritizes iron if the wagon takes both. |
| Storage-Push | Pushes this wagon's output into the nearest Storage wagon. |
| Front-Pull | Pulls from the wagon in front instead. |
| Auto-Drop | Drops what the wagon makes on the ground nearby. Does not light dynamite or torpedo fuses. |
| Magnet-Pick | Picks up items lying very close to the wagon. 2m for the first, +1m per extra copy. |
| Ghost | Lets players walk through that wagon. |
| Supercharge | +1 wagon level. No downside. |
| Hydrocharge | +2 wagon levels, but the wagon then needs water and can catch fire. It only heats while actually working. |
| Range-Extension | Increases range, by an amount that depends on the wagon. |
| Speed-Boost | Increases operating speed, again per wagon. |
| Stack-Boost | +2 stack size. On a Milk Wagon it raises the animal limit by 2 instead. |
| Time-Extension | Longer active time, and less fuel burned on consuming wagons. |
| Key | No effect on the wagon. One rides on each special wagon from a ??? Station, and you need five of them to open the secret biome's boss level. |
| Brakes | The only extension that fits the engine. Stops the train before it runs out of track. |
| Wagon Upgrade | A toolbox that raises a wagon a level. Appears outside Endless. |
| Wagon-Swap | Moves a wagon one slot forward. Time Attack only. |
There is no extension called "Level Increase". The two that raise a wagon's level are Supercharge and Hydrocharge.
:::warning Three popular pieces of advice that the game will not let you follow These combinations are blocked outright, so do not plan around them:
- Hydrocharge on the Storage wagon. Incompatible. And the reasoning usually given for avoiding it is wrong anyway: wagons with Hydrocharge heat up while operating, not as their inventory fills.
- Range-Extension on the Ghost wagon. Incompatible. Ghost range comes from the wagon's level, nothing else.
- Storage-Push on the Crafter. Incompatible. Push works on the Collector, Compactor, Conveyor-Belt-Transporter, Transformer and Mimic. :::
Storage-Pull on the Crafter is not a strategy either, because the Crafter already has one fitted from the start. The pipeline that does work is a Collector with Storage-Push feeding the Storage wagon, which the Crafter then pulls from on its own.
The Blacksmith trick is real and worth knowing: park valuable extensions on a cheap wagon early, then Recycle it later to move them onto something better.
Engine Progressionโ
Your engine sets your wagon capacity, your water reserve and how fast you start. It does not set your starting biome, which you pick separately from the biomes you have unlocked. Engines can only be swapped before a run begins, and the run ends when the engine crashes.
Wagon capacity grows by one for every biome you complete, up to a ceiling of thirteen.
The four enginesโ
| Engine | Start speed | Max wagons | Water | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hydro Coaler | 1st station | 5 | 60.0s | The default. |
| Toy Engine | 1st station | 4 | 60.0s | Free, unlocks with the Engine Foundry. Restarts you at the last station on a crash, as many times as you like. |
| Pusher Engine | later | 6 | 40.0s | Can sit anywhere in the train, and supercharges its neighbors by +2 levels, with its reach growing each biome. Losing the first wagon to a crash is survivable. |
| Spectral Express | 2nd station | 5 | 40.0s | Players pass through it. Every wagon gets a fourth extension slot with a free Ghost already in it, plus another slot every two biomes. Its wagon count never grows past 5. |
There is no engine called the "Starter Engine" and no "fast engine" tier. The Pusher and Spectral Express are the ones you buy with Hexnuts.
Each engine you unlock stays available for future runs, and you can start a run from any biome you have reached. Engine choice also splits the leaderboards: there is a ranked category per engine, including the Toy Engine, each with its own records.
The Bolt Economyโ
Bolts are the primary currency for everything - wagon purchases, upgrades, cartridge buying, and permanent meta-progression unlocks.
Earning Boltsโ
| Source | Details |
|---|---|
| Station connections | The primary source. Earned by successfully reaching each station. |
| Map pickups | Found scattered across levels. Worth collecting but not worth derailing over. |
| Tasks | Completing in-run TODO objectives (see the achievement for finishing 10 tasks in a row). |
| Piggybank conversion | Feed excess commodities into the Piggybank wagon for direct bolt conversion. |
Spending Bolts (Priority Order)โ
| Priority | Upgrade | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Crafter, and keep going | The genuine early bottleneck. You will have resources banked and be waiting on track. |
| 2nd | Storage | A bigger buffer keeps the Crafter fed while gatherers are away. |
| 3rd | Dynamite Wagon | Clears terrain far faster than tools. |
| 4th | Bridge Wagon | Turns water from a wood sink into a non-issue. |
| 5th | Ghost Wagon | Lets players get past a lengthening train. |
| 6th | Tank Wagon | Buy it before Boiler Badlands, which has no water of its own. |
| 7th | Miner or Collector | Automates the gathering half of the loop. |
| 8th+ | Situational | Milk, Brake, Carriage, Turret, Torpedo, depending on the route ahead. |
Resist buying one of everything. 49 bolts takes a single wagon from level 1 to 6, and one maxed wagon beats six level-1 ones. Depth over breadth, particularly in the first two biomes.
Hexnutsโ
Hexnuts are the overarching meta-currency earned across multiple runs. Unlike bolts (which reset on derailment), hexnuts persist permanently.
You earn 1 per station connected and 3 per boss junction, and the Hexnut Tree wagon produces them passively.
| Use | Cost |
|---|---|
| Toy Engine | Free, unlocks with the Engine Foundry |
| Spectral Express | 50 Hexnuts |
| Pusher Engine | 60 Hexnuts |
| Cartridge starter slots | 30 for the Action slot, then 25, 50 and 150 |
| Cosmetics | Varies, and several are event unlocks instead of purchases |
The Hexnut Hoarder achievement requires collecting 200 in total across all runs.
Wagon Positioningโ
Where you place wagons on the train matters. Some have range-based effects (Ghost, Collector, Supercharger, Mag-Tractor), so their position determines which other wagons benefit.
General rules:
- Place the Crafter toward the front of the train to shorten the walk for whoever is laying track.
- Place the Ghost wagon in the center so its radius covers wagons on both sides.
- Place the Dynamite wagon where players can easily reach it.
- Place the Collector where its range overlaps the ground your team is clearing.
- The Tank's position is irrelevant. Its water joins a single pool shared by the whole train.
:::tip Rearranging is free, so do it often There is no time cost and no bolt cost to moving wagons around at a station, and most stations have a revert button on the ground that undoes purchases and changes. Experiment.
The exception is the Biome Junction Station, which has no signpost, no wagon storage and no revert button. You cannot alter the train there, so sort the layout out at the station before you take a junction. :::
Recommended Buildsโ
Early Game (Monorail Meadows)โ
| Slot | Wagon | Target Level |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crafter | 3 or higher |
| 2 | Storage | 2 to 3 |
| 3 | Dynamite | 2 |
Mid Game (Cargo Canyon through Boxcar Bayou)โ
| Slot | Wagon | Target Level |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crafter | 4, with Hydrocharge |
| 2 | Ghost | 3 |
| 3 | Storage | 3, with Magnet-Pick |
| 4 | Dynamite | 3 to 4 |
| 5 | Bridge | 2 |
| 6 | Tank | 2 |
Late Game (Island Interchange through Underground Unit)โ
| Slot | Wagon | Target Level |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crafter | 6, with 2x Hydrocharge |
| 2 | Ghost | 5 or 6 |
| 3 | Collector or Mag-Tractor | 6, with Storage-Push |
| 4 | Dynamite | 6 |
| 5 | Bridge | 4 or higher |
| 6 | Torpedo or Turret | 4 or higher |
| 7 | Carriage | any |
| 8 | Tank | 4 or higher |
These are guidelines, not prescriptions. Adapt to your team size, the route ahead and what the stations actually offer. Remember your wagon capacity grows by one per biome completed, so the late-game list assumes you have earned the slots.
What Distance Records Actually Look Likeโ
The official leaderboards are public, and they are a useful reality check.
All-time single-run Endless records currently sit at roughly 85,700 meters on the Pusher Engine, with the Spectral Express and Hydro Coaler around 79,000 and the Toy Engine near 71,700. Nobody has passed 100,000 meters in a single run.
Boards are split three ways: by mode (Endless, Endless with the final boss, Classic, Time Attack, Time Attack weekly, Versus), by engine, and by period. There is no strategy-specific board. A separate Total Distance board sums every run a player has ever made, and its leader is past 1.3 million meters, and that is where six-figure numbers in this game usually come from.
The wagon that keeps deep runs alive is the Slot Machine, because it can produce resources on a map that has none left. Brake tracks are a situational tool for when the train is genuinely fast, not a way to park it.
Frequently Asked Questionsโ
What should you upgrade first in Unrailed 2?
The Crafter, and keep going past the first upgrade. Early on you will have wood and iron banked in Storage and be standing around waiting for track, which is the Crafter being the bottleneck. Storage comes second. Wagons go to level 6 at a Blacksmith for 49 bolts in total, and one strong wagon beats a train full of level 1 ones.
What is the best wagon in Unrailed 2?
The Dynamite wagon is widely considered the single best purchasable wagon, because a Level 2 or higher version clears entire sections of terrain in seconds. Running two Dynamite wagons in later biomes is a legitimate strategy, and pairing one with a Collector wagon creates the fastest resource pipeline in the game.
How does the Brake Track Wagon work?
It turns three ordinary tracks into one brake track, at every level. Upgrading makes it faster and gives it a bigger output stack, not a cheaper recipe. A brake track slows the train for about three seconds as it rolls over, and the size of the effect scales inversely with your speed: roughly half at 0.4 m/s, about 30 percent at 1.0 m/s, and almost nothing when you are already slow. If you want an on-demand brake, that is the separate Brake Wagon, which you dash into twice for a 75 percent slowdown.
What are Hexnuts used for in Unrailed 2?
They are the meta-currency that persists across runs, unlike bolts which reset. You earn one per station connected and three per boss junction. They buy the Spectral Express at 50 and the Pusher Engine at 60, your cartridge starter slots at 30, 25, 50 and 150, and cosmetics. The Toy Engine is free. Hexnut Hoarder wants 200 in total.
Where should you position wagons on the train?
Put the Crafter toward the front to shorten the walk for your track layer, and the Ghost wagon in the center so its radius reaches wagons on both sides. The Tank does not care where it sits, because all your Tank capacity forms one pool shared by the whole train. Rearranging is free, so adjust often, but do it before a Biome Junction because that station will not let you change the train at all.
