Achievement Guide
Unrailed! has 53 Steam achievements covering difficulty-tiered distance milestones, biome survival challenges, track construction records, mechanical feats, and animal ecology. None of them are hidden: Steam shows a description for every one. Many must be completed during a single continuous session, so saving or loading starts a new session and resets the tracking for those.
Unrailed! has 53 Steam achievements spanning difficulty-tiered distance milestones, biome survival challenges, track construction records, mechanical mastery, and animal ecology feats. Some come naturally through play, while others require deliberate strategies, specific difficulty settings, or extreme endurance.
The count grew four times: 41 at Early Access, 42 at 1.0 in September 2020, 47 with the Owl update, 49 with the winter characters in December 2021, and 53 with the Underwater update in March 2023. You will still find "48" quoted in places, including the community wiki's own header, and it has never been correct at any point in the game's history.
Many Unrailed! achievements must be completed during a single continuous session, and saving or loading the game starts a new session, which resets tracking for those. Since checkpoints are autosaves, loading one counts. Achievements tracked across multiple sessions are marked "Cumulative" below.
Achievements are not blanket-disabled in Sandbox. What is true is narrower: the 15 distance achievements and the 4 track-length achievements say "in endless mode" in their own Steam descriptions, so those will not unlock anywhere else. Bolts do exist in Sandbox, and biome-survival achievements have been reported unlocking there.
Distance Milestonesβ
Distance achievements track the total uninterrupted distance the train travels in Endless mode. These are tiered by difficulty - completing the same distance thresholds on harder difficulties earns separate achievements.
Easy Difficultyβ
| Achievement | Distance Required |
|---|---|
| Stroller | 100 meters |
| Hiker | 200 meters |
| Voyager | 500 meters |
| Wayfarer | 1,000 meters |
| Explorer | 2,000 meters |
Medium Difficultyβ
| Achievement | Distance Required |
|---|---|
| Advanced Stroller | 100 meters |
| Advanced Hiker | 200 meters |
| Advanced Voyager | 500 meters |
| Advanced Wayfarer | 1,000 meters |
| Advanced Explorer | 2,000 meters |
Hard Difficultyβ
| Achievement | Distance Required |
|---|---|
| Expert Stroller | 100 meters |
| Expert Hiker | 200 meters |
| Expert Voyager | 500 meters |
| Expert Wayfarer | 1,000 meters |
| Expert Explorer | 2,000 meters |
Distance milestones are cumulative within a single run, not across multiple runs. A run that reaches 500 meters on Easy unlocks Stroller, Hiker, and Voyager all at once. To maximize achievement progress, focus on single deep Endless runs on each difficulty tier.
Track Constructionβ
These achievements track the cumulative physical track placed on the map during a single session, independent of the train's forward distance.
| Achievement | Tracks Placed | Session Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Toy Train | 500 meters of track | Single session |
| Orient Express | 1,000 meters of track | Single session |
| Trans-Siberian Railway | 2,000 meters of track | Single session |
| Deep Space Transit | 4,000 meters of track | Single session |
Track construction achievements count the total track physically placed, not the train's forward progress. Curving tracks, detour bridges for bolts, and replacement tracks all contribute to the total. Deep Space Transit (4,000m) requires an extremely long, well-managed run.
Biome Survivalβ
Seven of these require spending 30 continuous minutes inside a specific biome without advancing. This demands intentional pacing: teams must loop track or deliberately keep the train slow to stay put.
| Achievement | Biome | Global Unlock Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Incurious | Plains | 47.4% |
| Mojave Courier | Desert | 19.1% |
| Nanuk | Snow | 2.8% |
| Satan's Minion | Lava | 1.6% |
| Martian | Mars | 0.8% |
| Apollo 13 | Space | 0.5% |
| 20 Miles Under the Sea | Underwater | 0.5% |
| Terminal Station (reach the Final Biome) | n/a | 2.0% |
Terminal Station is the exception: it triggers on reaching the Final Biome and has no timer.
:::tip Incurious being the most common achievement in the game is not a mistake At 47.4% it is unlocked more often than Stroller, which only asks you to reach 100 meters on Easy (44.3%). A struggling first team burns half an hour in the Plains before covering 100 meters, so this one arrives by accident far more often than by intent. :::
Note that Martian and Apollo 13 are genuine 30-minute holds despite descriptions that sound like arrival conditions ("Discover a new world", "Reached for the far side of the universe"). Both Mars and Space come before the Final Biome, so a simple reach condition could not be rarer than Terminal Station. Both are, on every dataset.
Mechanical Masteryβ
These achievements require specific gameplay feats, ranging from deliberate self-sabotage to extreme endurance.
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Session Type |
|---|---|---|
| Leet | Crash the train at precisely 1,337 meters. Requires extreme spatial awareness and intentional self-sabotage. | Single session |
| Wrong Way! | Force the train to travel to the left (backwards toward the origin point) for at least 60 meters. | Single session |
| Tough Nut! | Reach the Snow biome, which the game also calls the winter biome, on Extreme difficulty. | Single session |
| No Space For Improvement | Reach the Space biome without spending any bolts in the shop, except for the engine upgrades. | Single session |
| Marathon | Move the player character 42,195 units, the length of a marathon in meters. | Single session |
| Climate Change | Use the bucket to melt snow. At 43.5% this is the 4th most common achievement in the game, and most players get it without trying. | Single session |
| Rocketman | Fly around with the jetpack for 30 minutes in one round. Jetpacks exist in Space and on Mars. | Single session |
| Shopaholic | Spend an hour in the shop across a single session. | Single session |
| Engineer | Craft a cumulative total of 10,000 tracks. | Cumulative (multi-session) |
| Industrialist | Keep the Crafting wagon busy for an entire minute without pause. | Single session |
| Scrooge | Hoard 25 unspent bolts at one time during a single session. Starves the team of critical upgrades. | Single session |
| Missed Opportunities | Pass 50 train stations without connecting to them, opting to continue building into the void. | Cumulative (multi-session) |
Leet (crash at exactly 1,337m) is one of the most precise achievements in the game. Use the distance counter at the top of the screen to track your progress, then intentionally stop laying tracks when you approach the target. Account for any tracks already placed ahead of the train.
:::warning Industrialist: upgrade Storage, not the Crafter The instinct is to max the Crafter so it can produce for a solid minute. That is backwards. A higher-level Crafter drains its input faster, which makes an unbroken busy minute harder, and once it is Level 3 and supercharged it crafts instantly and never registers as busy at all. Upgrade Storage instead, fill it, and take care not to let the Crafter's rail stack fill up. It is achievable on the first stage. :::
Destruction and Animal Ecologyβ
These achievements involve dynamite usage, animal interactions, and the Milk Wagon system.
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Session Type |
|---|---|---|
| Destructionist | Use 100 dynamite. | Cumulative |
| Ducky Danger | Remove 100 ducks with dynamite explosions. | Cumulative |
| Snowman's Land | Disassemble 20 snowmen. Snowmen sit on water, so building a bridge on top of one kills it. Dynamite works too. | Cumulative |
| Dynamite Fishing | Pick up a Blowfish in the Underwater biome and hold on to it until it inflates and explodes in your hands. | Single session |
| Megalomaniac | Blow up three different types of animal at once with a single stick of dynamite. | Single session |
| Cowter Space | Bring a living Cow from the Plains all the way into Space, through the Desert, Snow, Underwater and Lava. | Single session |
| Shepherd | Have four different animals attached to the Milk Wagon at the same time. | Single session |
| Fire Fighter | Extinguish 10 Lava Blobs in one game. | Single session |
| Where They Belong | Bring a Bandit or Outlaw alive into hell, the Lava biome. | Single session |
There are five milkable animals, not four: Cow, Camel, Walrus, Blowfish and Lava Blob. Shepherd asks for any four different ones, so the set is yours to choose. Note that the requirement tightened at some point: it used to accept four animals of any kind, and now genuinely requires four different species as the description says.
:::warning Fire Fighter is only partly farmable A doused Lava Blob will run to the nearest lava and reignite, so you can extinguish the same one more than once. But only three times. After that it loses its fire ability and leaves the map. Ten extinguishes therefore needs at least four separate blobs, not one patient one. :::
Cowter Space is one of the most grueling achievements, because the Cow has to survive five biomes. Cows are among the slowest followers and they stop to rest, so they drift off easily. Keep the Ghost Wagon's radius over the Milk Wagon so the attached Cow turns ethereal, and that is what stops it being detached or crushed at pinches.
Obscure Unlocksβ
None of these are hidden. Steam publishes a description for all 53 achievements, and the API reports zero hidden entries. Only Lost was ever hidden, and it is not any more. What follows are simply the ones you are unlikely to stumble into.
| Achievement | How to Unlock | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lost | Run your character far off the edges of the main menu screen and stay completely out of bounds for 2 to 3 continuous minutes. | Not obtainable during seasonal events. |
| Saved by NausicaΓ€ | Navigate the Underwater biome and return to the surface through the mineshaft at the far end. | At 14.3%, much more common than the 30-minute Underwater achievement. |
| Fireworks! | Collect every orange special bolt to unlock the alternative fireworks version of the Final Biome. | Tied for the rarest in the game at 0.2%. |
| Collector | Unlock everything. | Characters unlock from achievements and seasonal events, not from a currency. |
| Achievement Master | Unlock all other 52 Steam achievements. | Tied for the rarest at 0.2%. |
Lost cannot be earned during seasonal events, and Halloween and Christmas events are both real and recurring in this game. Attempt it outside those windows. No source explains why the exclusion exists, so treat any stated reason as guesswork.
There is no persistent currency in Unrailed!. Orange special bolts do exactly one thing, which is unlock the final engine. Characters come from achievements (the two winter characters are tied to Snowman's Land and Tough Nut!, and reaching the Snow biome unlocks the reindeer) and from seasonal events.
The Rarest Achievementsβ
Satan's Minion is often called the rarest. At 1.6% it has 25 achievements sitting below it. The genuine rarest, all at 0.2%:
| Achievement | Rate |
|---|---|
| Fireworks! | 0.2% |
| Fire fighter | 0.2% |
| Achievement Master | 0.2% |
| Megalomaniac, Deep Space Transit, Leet, Missed Opportunities, Explorer and both Explorer tiers | 0.3% |
Recommended Completion Strategyβ
Phase 1: Learn the Basics (0-15 hours)β
- Play Endless mode on Easy with 2-4 players until you can consistently reach the Desert.
- Easy distance milestones (Stroller, Hiker, Voyager) unlock naturally.
- Incurious (30 min in Plains) is easy to achieve early - just delay reaching the station.
- Focus on understanding resource flow, role delegation, and emoji communication. Do not chase specific achievements.
- Ducky Danger and Destructionist progress accumulates naturally through normal dynamite usage.
Phase 2: Push Through Biomes (15-40 hours)β
- Reach Snow, Lava, and Space to unlock Nanuk, Satan's Minion (if you can survive 30 minutes), and Apollo 13.
- Wayfarer (1,000m) and Explorer (2,000m) distance milestones unlock during deeper runs.
- Start collecting orange special bolts in every biome for the Fireworks! achievement.
- Attempt Cowter Space by protecting a Cow from Plains to Space using Ghost Wagon coverage.
- Begin Medium difficulty runs to unlock the Advanced distance milestone tier.
Phase 3: Difficulty Tiers and Challenges (40-80 hours)β
- Push into Mars and the Final Biome for Martian and Terminal Station.
- Attempt Hard difficulty runs for Expert distance milestones.
- Tough Nut! (Snow on Extreme) requires significant skill. You can rehearse Snow in Sandbox, but only once you have already reached it in a real run, since Sandbox offers nothing you have not seen.
- No Space For Improvement (Space without spending bolts) demands extreme efficiency - attempt this on Easy.
- Hunt hidden achievements: Lost (main menu), Saved by NausicaΓ€ (complete Underwater), Fireworks! (all special bolts).
Phase 4: Completionist Cleanup (80+ hours)β
- Marathon (42,195 units moved) is the one endurance achievement whose scope is unclear: at 13.7% it is more common than reaching 500m on Easy, which is hard to square with hours of continuous running. Chip at it and see.
- Leet (crash at 1,337m) requires precision timing and an intentional crash.
- Scrooge (25 hoarded bolts) requires deliberately not spending. Combine with a distance run.
- Complete remaining cumulative achievements (Engineer: 10,000 tracks, Missed Opportunities: 50 stations passed).
- Collect all characters for the Collector achievement.
- Achievement Master unlocks when all other 52 achievements are completed.
100% achievement completion across all 53 achievements is a marathon. The difficulty-tiered distance milestones alone require separate deep runs on Easy, Medium, and Hard. Season-locked achievements (Lost during non-event periods) require timing. Extreme-difficulty achievements (Tough Nut!, Satan's Minion) require elite team coordination. Budget your achievement hunting across multiple weeks.

Frequently Asked Questionsβ
How many achievements does Unrailed have?
There are 53. The count grew from 41 at Early Access to 53 with the Underwater update in March 2023. The figure of 48 circulates widely, including in the community wiki's own header, and has never been correct at any point. The final one, Achievement Master, unlocks after you have earned all 52 others.
What is the rarest achievement in Unrailed?
Three are tied at 0.2 percent: Fireworks!, Fire fighter, and Achievement Master. Satan's Minion is often named instead, but at 1.6 percent it has 25 achievements below it. Mojave Courier, the 30-minute Desert hold, sits at 19.1 percent.
Do achievements unlock in Sandbox mode?
There is no blanket Sandbox lock. The 15 distance achievements and the 4 track-length ones specify "in endless mode" in their own descriptions, so those only unlock in Endless. Bolts exist in Sandbox and biome-survival achievements have been reported unlocking there. Note that Sandbox only offers engines and wagons you have already seen in a real run.
How do you unlock the Lost achievement?
Run your character far off the edges of the main menu screen and stay completely out of bounds for 2 to 3 continuous minutes. It does not work during seasonal events, because the Halloween and Christmas themes change the menu screen geometry. Attempt it during normal periods only.
Do distance milestones stack in a single run?
Yes, distance achievements are cumulative within one run, not across multiple runs. A run reaching 500 meters on Easy unlocks Stroller, Hiker, and Voyager together. Each difficulty tier has its own set, so plan single deep Endless runs on Easy, Medium, and Hard separately.
